I need some advice. We are immigrating to Australia next year and want to take our dogs with. The quarintine period is seven months. Three months in South Africa and four in Oz. What I would like to know is if this is worse on my dogs than finding good homes for them. I know my Boxer gets very stressed and looses weight even in the best kennels. Noenoes (Jack Russel) has never been in a kennel but is a very happy go lucky dog. I think she will handle this better. Has anyone been through this process? Can you give me some guidance? At the end of the day we want what is best for them.

How exactly does the 7 months period work for quaritine? What type of facility are they faced with.

Honestly if your boxer gets really badly in a nice kennel - I think the best thing for Jabba would be to re-home.
I dont think I could put Riot through that if I knew what he would go through.
You would also loose out on SOO much training time as well, so much cuddle time. You also dont know what circimstances are at the kennels as well.

I assume they are stuck in a kennel run in - like at a shelter. I dont think I could put Riot through that..

Its a huge personal choice though.

There are only two kennels doing this in SA. I've seen both and wouldn't even consider the first. It was terrible and I left in tears. The second was great. The kennels are clean and big. The dogs also have a square to exercise in. This is a lawned area with lots of trees and a small sand area. The staff also seemed very friendly and looked as if they really loved animals. I thought of finding a home for Jabba and maybe only taking Noenoes. She is more like a child in my home. I have been struggling to fall pregnant for five years and she filled that hole in my life. It is one of the hardest choices I ever had to make.

Unfortunately the problem is on the Australian side. They don't have a rabies problem at all and we do so they are extremely strict on these rules. No budging them.

As long as the dogs are in a controled atmosphere that allow day to day contact with cuddles, kisses, walks, hugs, treats etc..

then it would be in my thoughts. Are you allowed to visit your dogs at all while they are in quarentine..

hmm I guess that question is self explanitory eh lol

Thank goodness I am allowed to visit them. I can even take them new toys and bedding. I will never survive not seeing them for so long. I know the dogs are cared for by the same person every day. If I remember correctly it is five dogs per caretaker.

Ohh ok, so that doesn't seem as bad as what I had originally had thought of then!

As long as you think that your dogs can handle the plane rides and strangers around them saftely and soundly - then why not.

Are they "older" dogs?

I have a client preparing to go back to Australia to live in December. They are torn about this as well, as they are both terriers, over 10 yrs of age and the female has recently been diagnosed with a heart condition. Her dogs do very well here in my kennel for several week long stays, but she's contemplated a new home for them here as she doesn't want to seperate them. One would be fine, tough as nails. The others heart, a big concern and she is a much more fragile dog when it comes to being handled by strangers. After much debate, her families decided to try the quarantine but has an alternate home arranged should the one become distressed and not thrive in a long term boarding situation. It depends on the dog. I'd do it, but have a backup plan, where these my dogs. Good luck!
