I saw a client today with a dog that I really want. I Rarely ever say this about client dogs (I am very picky)! This old lady came in with this new dog they got. It is a 9 month old papillon mix (about 20 pounds, but looks very much like a big pap). He was barking is Head off at everything that moved in the waiting room. Pulling on the leash to get to something. Scratched his owners hand from trying to control him. I called them into the room, and sent her to the bathroom to wash her hand. I was holding the dogs leash in the exam room while she was doing this.

I settled down right away with me. Started to do the little "ruff" barks which lead up to the full blown ordeal. He stopped when i said, and i was able to distract and keep him from exploading. He just became really relaxed with me because i was calm and confident with him. I knelt down, and he came right over to me for pets. I kept hold of the leash and him when the owner came back as she didnt care/didnt want it. He was still more attentive to me then her.

I just saw HUGE potential for him in the little time i was with him. I could socialize him, train him, get it so he was relaxed when out and not explode at everything. He is going to get worse with her as she is just a little old lady with no boundries for him. I really want that little dog to let him blossom into what he could be. I wanted to tell her that if she doesnt want him, then i would take him. I cant though, and im sad because of it. He has none of the temperament, physical, or anything traits i actually want in a dog. He is actually everything i dont want (small, shedding, long hair, reactive, shy, etc). That little dog just spoke to me though. I want him.

Awwww....that is so sad when you see a dog like that, that you know you could do so much with. And there it is....wasting so much potential. Did the lady seem to like him? Or did she look purely annoyed? You could ask....it couldn't hurt. But that's only if you decided that maybe this dog who spoke to you that way might be what is actually meant to be... and not what you assume....the no shedding, not small or any of the traits you have in mind being absent. I mean...do you really know for sure what you want or could it be that the plan for you is to step outside the box? LOL. What a scary thought!

Anyhow, I totally can relate to your experience.

It is funny that sometimes what we think we don't want at all can bring us the most joy.
That being said, it is hard, isn't it, when we cross paths with a dog or cat that we just love but may not be available.
I had this happen once with a cat. I still think about that cat.

It's terrible. ^ I see a lot of dogs come through the daycare that I love, but that I wouldn't bring home with me. And then one will come in with issues out the wazoo, and I WANT that dog SO BADLY, but I highly doubt that the dogs people would ever "get rid" of the dog, even though she's SO TOTALLY not suited to them and drives them batsh*t crazy. I wish I could just say "Hey, you know... if you ever decide she's too much for your family, I would love to have her"

But, I can't and I'm a big fat chicken anyway, so even if I could, some of the other people at work would probably take her first.

There was a Border Collie in such a situation at the daycare I worked at. I'm actually surprised they kept and had they decided not to, she'd be here for sure.
