Well I have a pomeranian that is a little more than one year old and I was thinking about spaying her. The animal control does it for free once a month but I was a little wary. I dont know, just something about the surgery, I'm scared of.

Can someone tell me what I should do or watch out for before and after the surgery? what will she be doing differently?

it's normal to be scared about surgery. it's a scary thing. there are risks any time you put an animal under anesthesia. but it's also far less risky to spay her when she's young and healthy than it would be to risk an emergency spay for a pyometra (infected uterus) when she's older and sick.

my best advice would be call your vet and talk to them about it.

Good for you for choosing to spay your dog. Female dogs left intact long term are sure to suffer some ill health problems later on. Pyometra is a major one.

I would also recommend you talk to your regular vet and if you trust them, have your vet do the procedure. It's a fairly simple surgery with a 10-14 day recovery time, but I totally understand why you feel nervous.

First I would call your vet and ask them if they've received any problems or complaints from your local animal control spay/neuter clinic. Fortunately in our area both the local HS and the animal control have wonderful facilities and I'd trust them with my animals. Unfortunately not all of them are as fortunate. If there are no problems with your vet then I would feel safe letting them do the procedure. Make sure your vet knows that it is being done and ask for any emergency information (office hours, where to go during their closed time, another vet in case of emergency).

There are always risks to having any procedure done. I'm petrified of having my seniors teeth cleaned. Nothing is to be taken lightly. BUT....neither are the risk of not having it done.

Somehow I read that as "I'm going to spay my mom" :yikes:
*guffaws*:D

Seriously though, in rescue we've had lots of dogs spayed and neutered and I've never heard of a problem. I think major problems are pretty uncommon, however there are some breeds who are sensitive to anesthesia and stuff. Good for you for wanting to do your research.:)

Kudos to you !!! We have a very cheap place here compared to vets . I don't think that they do blood work-ups though ......go with your heart and your pocket book !

Ok I'm planning to call my vet this afternoon and asking them what they think about the spay/neuter at the animal shelter. I didn't want to do it at the vet because of the high cost, but I'm thinking it might make me feel better doing it there. Are the people who do it at the animal control just volunteers or are they vets?

My pomeranian is expected to be in heat in a couple of weeks. When should I bring her in to get spayed?

The people doing it at the shelter are vets, and they may be excellent ones. But as in any profession there are great and there are not so great vets everywhere so it's best to just check up a little on them beforehand. Spaying is routine surgery, but it's still surgery and there can be complications, so you want to be sure that you really trust the people doing it.

Do make sure you get it done well before she's expected to come in to season. Spay surgery gets much more complicated and risky if done while the dog is in heat and many vets will refuse to do it unless it's an emergency.
