I'm a four year old preschool teacher, and for months now I've been trying to decide what classroom pet would be good for us. We already have a betta fish - and the children love to take care of "Pluto". We also have had a tadpole who turned into a frog (and has been a frog for over a year now) GREAT learning about science, care, etc... really boring pet! He is now living next door to us in the 3yr old room (they really wanted him) and we're looking for something a little more interesting. I wanted to take my rats in, but other staff prevented me from doing so... Gerbils & hamsters were out, due to personal preference and the last hamster at the center got loose a lot :)mad:) and bit & brought blood... grr...

So at a science class the teachers (myself included) took for content standards and stuff like that, there was an example of a class who did a whole year long project on birds, and got parakeets for the room. LONG story short, two parakeets were donated to my room after this idea popped into our heads. I've had the children doing 'research' and lots of prep stuff before they came into our room. Picked out a cage, toys, etc together... and its a on going learning experience for Everyone involved, IMHO :D

So we have two parakeets, one male and one female. They are both green and yellow - the male has a little bit of blue. He was already pre-named Romeo... and the children named the female. At the end it was between Lacey and Juliet and Juliet got the most votes :rofl1: Juliet's pretty wild - it was difficult getting her from one cage to the other. I got bit :rofl1: glad no one else was around lol. Romeo is tame. Crazy tame.
He'd much rather be with me, than in the cage with her. They have to come home with me (or my assistant teacher) on the weekends, and I have to admit I'm falling for him. He jabbers and talks to me, rides on my shoulder. I can make out "hello" and "pretty bird"! :D but mostly just jabbering. He tried to eat from my plate  and is already spoiled!

so, here's a little pic

my new... "part time pet" :rofl1: just wanted to share :)

I'd say that it's better than my Biology teacher had in college . He had a Spider Monkey who took a shine to me . Yes , I love monkeys , but not one on my shoulder with his tail wrapped around my neck while grooming my hair and chattering away when I was trying to concentrate on the assignment .
