Well part of not being an isolationist country is not only fighting off terrorists and the like in other parts of the country but also helping other countries as well.

That being said, I dont know how much MORE money will be spent on these programs... its just that where now the money can only be spent on programs that work on contraception and family planning now the money will also be allowed to go to groups that support and/or perform abortions and abortion education. I dont think Congress is really going to send much more money to these places it just a matter of how the money will be allocated.

Oh and it was signed on Friday afternoon because if I dont get fridays off neither should Obama. :p

The U.S. already spends money on programs overseas. Someone please clarify if I'm wrong, but I don't think this legislation is increasing the money we already spend. Instead, it changes the eligibility requirements for foreign programs that *can* receive U.S. aid. Now, aid groups that provide abortions can be eligible to receive funding.

Yeah, its no more money. Just eligability. THe current rule said a third of the money had to go to abstience only programs, and the rest could not go organizations that performed, or even discussed as an option, abortion. Basically, if they are working in, say, Africa, and a preganant African lady comes to them and says she was raped, and by the way she has AIDS, and organization that even mentioned, as an option, that she could abort the child could not receive funds. They didn't have to perform it, or even recommend it. They weren't even allowed to mention it. It was a huge limit on free speach.

I don't think the timing meant anything, really, the man was sworn in Tuesday and he's trying to get a lot done. And this is a good one. I'm not sure I'd like my money going to provide abortions (except perhaps in situations like I described) but I'm pretty unhappy with the idea that people, health workers, were forbidden to even discuss it or risk losing their funding.

Yes, it is your money too. You could send extra if you wanted....I'm sure they'd find a use for it.

I guess I was too young to understand the implications during the Clinton years. I'm glad everyone is comfortable with it....I'm happy you don't feel as sick as I do about it....makes for a crappy day.

What . . . what difference does it make that it was signed on a Friday? O___o Would a Thursday have made you feel better?

I hope this means they'll have more resources to promote condoms in Africa. Unfortunately, thanks in part to certain faith-based groups, there's a lot of misinformation in parts of Africa, like "Condoms cause AIDS" or "Poverty causes AIDS" (like, the cause is literally not having money :yikes:) or "Having sex with a virgin will get rid of AIDS" . . .

The president (maybe former president now) of South Africa claimed for a long time that you could cure AIDS by eating garlic.

I dont think it is going to change any of that in all honesty... the US can NOT prevent any of these faith based organizations from saying what they want or think... and they have had plenty of money to promote condoms, and AIDS research so if that isnt working, this isnt going to change that.

This piece of legislation really isnt a big deal... Hounded is right this thing goes in and out of law almost every time a new party is elected in... it is only going to allow abortion groups (meaning any group that discusses and/or performs them) to compete for funding... we are not sending more money and we are not fixing the birth rate in third world countries with this act alone.

Honestly of all the EO's he has signed so far this is probably the one that will have the least impact on the US.
