if you had a intact male dog and you come out and see him breeding with a a stray or wandering female, what would you do?

any responsible person on this forum would not let their intact male out unsupervised in the first place :)

I have fences to make this not an issue. But speaking theoretically...

Keep the female, attempt to find the owner, encourage them to spay her.

If no owner is found, spay her and rehome her yourself.

They've been known to climb fences.:D

I was just thinking. We all went over if you found your female breeding in your backyard, but not if your male was breeding another female.

Hi Purdue,
I would do just as Summit suggested. If you do not find the owner, and you still want to do the right thing(spay the female), call rescue organizations in your area. Ask any local vet for numbers and names. Ask the organization(s) for help with spaying, shots, heartworm test and (hopefully) preventative, flea/tick control, and re-homing her.
It is a good thing for you to care enough to post this question. Now to focus on your male dog. It would be best to neuter him asap. Also, it sounds as if your dog either is let loose or tied outdoors. No matter what you may have been told neither of those are good choices. Too many bad things can and do happen. He will be safest and probably live longer if he is fenced or walked on a leash.
I understand he may be an outdoor dog. Please understand that dogs are, "pack" AKA "family" animals. Your dog needs regular interaction with you. My dogs are all indoor/outdoor dogs. I put them out in the fenced yard when they need to go out and to play. Otherwise they are indoors.
Best to you, your dog, and the female dog. I hope this helps. I hope you find her owner and that she is spayed immediately. Most of all I hope you have your dog neutered and can find a safer way for him to be with you other than having him loose or tied outdoors.

We'll it did happen to me over 40 years ago . We lived in the country and back then dogs didn't have to be fenced in . My male was intact ( breeding program ) and there were now females around . BUT... one Thanksgiving a relative of a farm nearby brought her female Collie in heat and chained it by the barn .( I didn't know this ) When the other dogs returned from their morning romp and Rufus wasn't with them , I worried so loaded the 3 kids in the car and started driving around . Yup ... there the were tied ! I knocked on the door and their first reaction was hose them down . Luckily the owner of the collie knew this could damage the dogs .... so we waited it out . She shrugged it off ..... stuff happens ...... I had my dog tested for any diseases . Two wrongs don't make a right .... but I never would have tied a female in heat out in an area where farm dogs roamed.

i would leave them and then contact the owner and insist on a emergency spay, or i would pay for the emergency spay and rehome the female

We have a lot of stray dogs roaming around. They mostly roam with our population of coyotes, inbreeding and causing problems.:(

He's always with us. when we are outside he's at my side. I'm constantly training with him for 4-H agility and obedience. We are also working on him with discs. He's not tied up either or left in the backyard to become a crazy wild animal. He sleeps in our garage in his crate when we are not there.I would leave him out, but no so trustworthy of that invisible fence while we are gone. we are looking for a kennel because we are gone most of the day and he has to stay in his crate for over 8 hours sometimes because no one can get home to take him out. Being an aussie, this makes him even more turbo charged. I think we are going to build one. so he won't have to be locked up all day. I let him come in every once and a while to our living room.
when he's older i'm thinking about sneeking him into my room. Do you think my mom will notice a 75lb. dog on my bed?;)

oh.. and this is a hypothetical.:p we have wandering female problems around here and it would be nice to know what to to.

i even have another question.... what if it was a feral female that panicked... how would you calm her down and keep her from hurting herself and the male?
