Alrighty. I had an OB apt today for a basic checkup and an STD screening because of the situation with that guy and such. They had to draw my blood. Now... most of you know I'm anemic. With that said... I do NOT do well with having my blood drawn and usually wind up passing out.

I sat down. I was perfectly calm. I was ready for this. I kept telling myself... this time will be different and I can handle it. She sticks the needle in my skin and starts to do her thing to draw my blood. I forgot to tell her about my anemia.

I felt a sudden warmness over me and felt like I was bleeding out of my ears all of a sudden even though I wasn't. Everything started to go dizzy and blurry. The nurse says something to me, but I could barely hear her. I had a stomach ache and wanted to throw up. All of a sudden I started convulsing and sweating so bad that my pants and shirt were soaked. They think it may have been a seizure. I heard a faint sound which I think was the nurse calling out for help. Then I passed out.

I came to and they started trying to get me to drink water. I drank three glasses and had a moist towel on my head. Everything was blurry. The cabinets looked like they were moving all over the place... everything sounded so far away.

When I thought I might be ok enough to stand up and leave I stood up. I turned around to walk out the door and passed out again... oh boy...

I came to again and they gave me more water and one of the nurses came back with chocolate for me as well. The chocolate helped a lot for some reason. I still feel really weak from it all, but definitely better after having eaten.

All that for a darn HIV test? oh boy... I'm sure it was worth it though. I hate hate HATE getting blood drawn. I have to get it done again soon too since I have another apt for my anemia coming up. LOVELY!

ya it does keep coming... oh boy... problem is my anemia is getting worse and because the over the counter iron isn't working anymore i'm wondering if my body is starting to reject the iron. I'm going to the doctors for it and going to try prescription stuff first and go from there.

Why do you have anemia? Has your doc confirmed that it is JUST low Iron? Make sure your doc's are looking at everything if you don't know what is causing it.
It took them 6 months to figure out why I had such bad enemia (hemoglobins below 80 and needing blood transfusions).

Btw, you have my sympathy......my worst fear is passing out in public, now thats drama.
Good luck

Gosh Amber... (((HUGS)))
I do not have a problem with blood, my thing is needles. *shakes* I have yet to pass out from them *knock on wood* But I sometimes shake and the doctors have to use infant needles on me, the bigger the needle the worse I shake.

Also, I have had low iron my WHOLE life. Since I was born. They tried every kind of iron pill they could, they gave me iron shots, they did the herb pills with iron in them, when I turned 16 they put me on women one a day iron/calcuim pills, they gave me some kind of cream, etc etc. I have tried it all and they have decided that when I turn 18 or when my immune system gets stronger, they will put me on a stronger iron pill that I can handle and they hope it helps. Other than that, I have come to terms that my body will always have low iron and nothing will help.
Hopefully something will help you. :)

(Oh I texted you the other day telling you about something but I forgot what it was. Did you get the text? lol... sorry off topic.)

Thanks guys. Adojrts... I'll definitely ask my doctor to look into that. Last time I had my iron tested they thought it was just the iron... but its been a while so who knows. It's definitely worth testing again.

Dak, I don't think I got your text. What was it about?

My mom has Crohn's Disease, which is preventing her body from absorbing iron, so what she has to do is go to the doctor every Tuesday and get have iron dripped right into her blood. She tried one treatment, but had a bad allergic reaction to it, so now she does a different one. Yeah it involves needles in arms, but my mom says she doesn't get tired so much now, and I think she looks better too, no more dark bags under the eyes! You might want to get your colon checked to see if you are having absorbtion problems or something.

Are you getting enough vit B? All the iron in the world won't help your hemoglobin if you are low on some of your Bs.

There's vitamin B in the other vitamin I take which is just a basic multivitamin. I don't know how much is in it though and this sounds stupid, but as far as foods go I don't know what are the best foods for getting your daily dose of VitB. *runs to google search*

Cristy... the doctor mentioned running that colon test... doesn't sound fun... but I told them just to do whatever they have to do.

All I know is that me convulsing and sweating like crazy and then passing out twice? something definitely was off... right?

From a paper I wrote on folic acid (one of the B vitamins)

Folate deficiency can cause megaloblastic (or microcytic) anemia. Indications of this are red blood cells that are larger than normal, and the ratio of nucleus size to cell cytoplasm is increased. There are other potential causes of megaloblastic anemia, that include other B vitamins, B12 in particular. As well as various inborn metabolic disorders.

If the cause is found to be folate deficiency, then treatment with folate is the standard approach.
