I took Petie this past weekend to an agility fun match. I have a trial next weekend, then the Ontario Regionals a couple of weeks later.........
We were having a decent day, I was thrilled that when I excuted a FC followed directly with a RVP to avoid two separate OC's, it worked beautifully.
Someone that I have taught was having a problem with her dog blowing her off, I advised her to say nothing to her dog if this happened and to just leave the ring.........I would fetch her dog while she got her other dog and took that dog for some play, training and tug.
That is what happened, but when I went to get her dog out of the ring, I made a STUPID choose, I quickly handed Petie to someone else that I know while I left.
Petie is a reactive dog and I know the hows and whys of what he does and how to manage him, so he doesn't react to other large dogs walking past, or even stepping over him etc.
I was heading back to where I had left Petie with this person (I had the other dog with me) when another large dog passed by Petie very closely. Petie reacted, by lunging forward, snarling and snapping. The person holding him, jerked him back, yelled at him and to finish it off SHE SLAPPED MY DOG ACROSS THE FACE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw the entire thing, I yelled to her but not before she slapped him.
I passed off the dog that I had and removed Petie from her as he cowered beside her. The only thing I said to her was in a surprising calm voice 'Don't you EVER hit my dog again.' And left, going to a happy upbeat voice and body language, getting Petie to focus on me and to hopefully forget what had happened.
Oh I wanted to at least yell at her if not more, but I had to get rid of those feelings immediately for my dogs benefit.
Of course it also didn't help that everyone that had seen what happened (about 30 people) kept coming up to me, saying " I would kill that woman if I were you!!!'
My next run wasn't very good, go figure................but we had some fun and did some piece work.
The woman that slapped my dog? Never said sorry, neither at the time nor has she had the decency to call.
But she did come over and sit beside us again.........and guess what? My dog approached her, she petted him and he jumped up onto her lap and licked her face.
My dog is a better than I am, I still wanted to take a strip off of her lol.
In the end its ALL my fault, I should have never left him with her in the first place. Even if it was to help someone else. I should have just put him in his crate for a minute or two before the other dog started its run.
How stupid of me. But its a done deal, Petie is fine, I will forgive as well, both to the other person and myself and ensure I don't trust anyone with my dog again in the future. Thats my job for the well being of him and other dogs, since he is reactive (not fair to other dogs on any level). I also know how to avoid having him react, its simple 'watch me'. The reason my dog is reactive?? He has been jumped or attacked by sooooo many other dogs, he now doesn't care if other dogs are friendly, he just wants them to stay away. BTW, he is ONLY like this at trials, he has never been jumped at home or with other dogs at home, large or small, and many different breeds, he also loves to play with other dogs. He loves to have other dogs chase him etc.
After it happened, I spent alot of time, playing watch me games and walking him past large dogs and thanking their owners for their patience. Petie was fine.
OK done venting now, lol its good to vent but at the right time and in the right way. At the event was not the right way or the right time. If I had done that, it would have only made it worse for Petie.
Take care
