We were coming home, Hyia and me, when she said "oh no Mama there are two baby raccoons there on the side of the highway"
so dang it. I pulled into the next station, got a big metal can out of the back that my Mom had given me, grabbed Victor's blanket that we use to put on concrete if we are stuck anywhere and we walked back. After living with raccoons in the attic for a winter I thought they were the most mean creatures to each other that ever existed. They had fought, screamed, yipped, to the point of driving Pepper to madness before they were gone and I did not want to get involved with two babies at one time. But Hyia was almost in tears so I started telling her on the way, do not touch, do not reach down, do not do anything you see me doing until your an adult and understand your safety first ALWAYS. Think where the cars are and so on. As we approached I thought they are dead, they are not moving. She said no they aren't. See their eyes are open. Her eyes being much better than mine. So we approach, I have her go to the outside and come from behind. I put the metal can down and held the lap blanket out like a wall on the other side. One baby is holding the other, curled around it with his arms around the bottom's head and neck. THey stay stock still. I wiggled the blanket a little and the top one got up very reluctantly then shot across the highway, over the 3 foot divider, across the construction and into the weeds. So obviously that one wasn't hurt. The first one crawled into the can, a good sign. I saw no blood. So I covered the can with the blanket and carried it back to the car. Got home put the whole show in the bathtub for lack of anywhere else at the moment (must get er crate) put down a bowl of water, put one little electric candle in the room, turned off the light and backed out. Started making calls. No, no one out here, the only place is across town to the Nature Sanctuary at Lakeside.
feeder yesterday, almost ready to be on his own. I went back in and slide him out of the can to see if anything was broken. He/she crawled up by the faucet and pressed his body agaisnt the wall. So really good sign, nothing seems to be broken, I put a blanket in the can, held it up to him and he crawled back in it. Scared to pieces. So hopefully if everything seems ok in the morning we can release him at hte Nature Sanctuary out here which is what they said to do. If you got a little vibe for yet another one of God's creatures that has to endure what we dish out, he could use it. I know when you drop them off in another raccoon's territory it's bad business, but I am not sure my car which has a problem can make it in this heat ( that goes for me too) across town. There is a vet out here that takes injured and I am waiting for them to get back from lunch. THat's it for today's adventure. I told Hyia she could not go in and talk to him, nothing to seem friendly, and certainly no handling. HE might have a concussion, or something else. There is no diarrhea, no bad odor, no obvious swelling. So I know not else what to do. :(:(:(

I never would have seen them so she saved the day for them. THank you Bax. He/she is going to need some vibes.

I think this one is unhurt, just too petrified to move. THat is a very long very high wall..almost 20 ft at the top and it takes about half a block to taper down in either direction. They were exactly in the middle. Across is concrete mediums separating construction with a ton of traffic day and night. IT's very narrow. I think they might have tumbled off the wall and couldn't find a way back up. Were too scared to move. With no ac we can go no where for now, so a cool dark room with a bowl of water and the comfort of a blanket and a dark can seems to be fitting the bill. I see nothing broken, and this baby does not seem to be in pain. Some time to decompress I think is what he needs now more than anything. Tomorrow morning we can go to whoever says yes.

I disturbed him only long enough to assess his health and then got out of the room. Looking for a transport crate, if I can't find one I will cut the top out of the top of his tin (it is just about the right size) and secure a screen. I have a piece. Pain in the butt so I won't do that until I have to.

Yes he has fleas. I saw one in the water bowl. Good news, a wet muzzle, a sleeping baby, and the water level is way down.

Whatta sweetie, I knew a guy who had one as a pet. Litter trained and roamed the apartment like a cat. Don't know how he tamed it.

Oh gosh Smrkie...what a good deed. I hope they'll be okay. They sure are cute. I love raccoons. They can get really tame. But they can also be very dangerous if they're not tamed and destructive. But these babies are super cute. Good luck with the vet. I hope everything goes well.

One more while I checked to make sure bedding wasn't wet. All I have to do is hold up the can and the baby shoots right back in it. At least we have a workable routine. Other than that I am leaving the baby alone. I did wet some cheese and push it closer with a long fork. That got a few licks. I would like to send him/her off well hydrated with a good belly of food. Fingers crossed something tonight gets eaten. No snarl or growl or hiss. Just scared and holding absolutely still. I know the baby was out of the can when I went in because I heard him/her shoot back in when I opened the door. I will bleach down the bathroom tomorrow and hope we have no flea contamination. There was no flea debris on the bedding, and other than the one in the water bowl I don't see any hopping around. Fingers crossed. I work very hard to keep flea free here. Taming is the easy part but I am resisting because it would be best for this one to return to the wild/. They don't stay tamed as they mature and that can lead to a lot of problems for both the animal and the owner.

Been taking a poll, and the most agreed upon opinion is to take him to the other side of the highway, where they other one ran this evening. We can go quite a ways away from the road toward the woods, so that he will be in his own territory and most likely able to join up with his own family. Still going to call a couple other places. The thing about catch and release is when you drop one in another's territory they will have to fight for the right to stay. I would hate that for this scared baby. GG said he probably knows about roads now and that they are something to stay away from. The other agreed upon decision is to release him at dusk. He ate and drank lst night and is asleep in the sink.

Since he is not injured the vet will not take him. Haven't made a final decision yet.

Talked to two more experts and the almost unanimous opinion is to take him back close to where I found him, on the side the other one ran. Dusk is better than dawn, and it's ok to give a good meal before he goes. So wish us luck. Wish him/her luck. They believed the baby is old enough to make it on his own, but they are very social, and would have a greater chance for survival with Mom and siblings.

I had one when I was young. I would not go through that again! WHen they mature they let you know they are a wild animal and then they are not prepared to live the life they so desperately want. We were lucky that a lady that had dedicated herself to giving racoons just like mine a sanctuary took him. They are smart, and into everything. They can be very destructive,. Two more hours to setting him free.

Thank you for the thought. It would be nice if they were more like dogs or cats but they sure are not.

we went directly across from where he was found by the highway, and went the direction the other baby ran. Followed it down and found this creek.

click for vid..I tamped the bottom of the can to get him going and to leave a scary impression of people in general.

looked like a good place, lots of frogs, tons of frogs, and obviously a lot of racoons, hopefully the whole family clan came from here. I hope so. I would have felt better about the nature sanctuary but this is what I was told by several sources was the right thing to do. This creek is healthy here. On our side, the other side of the golf course is a whole different story. no frogs, no bugs, no nothing but green slime. Gee I wonder why..sighs. Good luck little guy. I know the world is full of raccoons, but a baby is a baby, and no one should have to be that scared, specially when they are so young. Now because no good deed goes unpunished I get to scour the bathroom and bleach the tub, and get that awful mud off of my shoes.
