Hello. I am new to this site, but have often read the various threads and forums when I had questions with regards to my dogs.

I would like to provide a little background on my dog before getting to my question so please forgive the length of this post:

About one year ago I adopted a small female border collie mix from a local shelter. She is 3.5 years old. When I adopted her she was underweight and she soon became ill with an upper respiratory infection. There was also some concern that she may have Von Willebrand's disease. Additionally she was matted and her coat was falling out. After a lot of work, she is now very healthy and we plan on getting her spayed soon.

Last year during the Fourth of July celebrations Scout "freaked" out. She shook uncontrollably, panted, and jumped on our bed and dug under the pillows, even if we were in the bed. The only thing that calmed her down was putting her in the bathroom with the door open and the fan going. After the fireworks stopped she would settle down.

This year, the fireworks in our neighborhood have started early and we got the same response, however, now she seems to listen all the time, and is also fearful about other noises that didn't bother her before, like our upstairs neighbor walking around, putting silverware in the drawer, etc.

I decided to try deconditioning her to the sound of fireworks by very quietly playing some on the stereo. I started at the very lowest setting, in fact, I could barely hear it, and she freaked out.

Basically, this dog is a great dog and I don't want her spending the rest of her life in the bathroom with the fan on because of any little noise. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated...

Well, I was going to say try to desensitize (sp) her to the sounds, but you have tried that :) I am not really sure maybe when some of the other members see this they will come up with some more ideas...Maybe it has something to do with her life previous to when you adopted her??

I think the tape idea is a good one - but start off barely audible (VERY low)and DISTRACT her from the noise. Get her attention on you any way you can - treats, toys, cuddles - all great positive happy things!

Once she is happy with that - turn the sound up TINY bit by TINY bit.

You haven't got long till 4th july, so you will need to find some way of getting her somewhere silent, because there is no way you can desensitise her in this short time span..

I used to have a lab/border collie mix, and she was the same way. She would totally freak out, to the point of injuring herself. One year, a few days before the fourth of July, my husband and I had gone out of town for the day and left her home with my daughter who was in and out all day. They were doing fireworks in our neighborhood during the day, and she freaked out, got over the fence to our neighbors house, and literally burst into their house, and went and hid behind their toilet. They couldn't get her out of the house, so they let he stay there until my daughter returend home. I don't know what advice to give you. I had thought about sedating Abby during that time, but now the fireworks just seem to go on and on.

ooh - have you thought of buying a pheromone plug in too. This will help somewhat to keep her calm - but not totally - in conjunction with training.

I honestly think at this late stage though the best advice is go somewhere in the middle of nowhere!!

I think I will continue with the desensitizing, along with the recommendations for the pheramone plug and distractions. I will probably start after the 4th though so as to have a clean slate.

I have to do something though. This spring Scout scaled a six foot fence while visiting my parent's house when the cherry cannons starting going. No one would have believed it if my brother hadn't seen it. The next visit to my parent's house she ran through a screen door when my dad and brother were watching a war movie.

Needless to say, my family finds her to be an "interesting" dog!
