All right, my sister's college graduation luau is next Saturday! But I need a little help with the menu. It's going to be a pretty good-sized bash--expecting about 50-60 guests. The whole thing is going to take place outdoors. Here's what we have so far:

Whole roast pig (on a spit in the backyard, woohoo!)
lomi lomi salmon
grilled salmon and tuna
grilled teriyaki beef and chicken skewers
Peking duck
squid poki (spicy squid dish, served chilled)
lumpia (Filipino eggrolls)
Asian seaweed salad
pancit (Filipino version of chow mein noodles)
macaroni salad
Asian-style cabbage slaw
Steamed white rice
fruit salad w/plenty of fresh pineapple

We're having issues with the alcohol and dessert. Besides beer, we were thinking pina coladas. But it's hard to maintain a big vat of frozen drinks outside for that many people. Mom was going to try pitchers of homemade sangria instead, but wasn't sure how well it would go with the luau menu and theme.

We don't know what we're doing for dessert, either. It needs to be something that fits a luau theme, and is resiliant enough to be served outside.

Ideas or recipes, anyone?

LOL, you wouldn't need to crash it! You'd be invited! We shall sit together, chow down and Chaz-talk all night. :D

Whether it fits or not sangria is always a good thing =). Everything sounds delicious and makes me kinda nostalgic thinking about a Fillipino babysitter I had when I was little. Pancit is still one of my favorites. God I'm blanking out on deserts though, in fact thinking about most of the Fillipino dinners/barbecues I've been to I can't remember if I ever ate desert. For some reason it's not a really big deal to most of my asian friends and relatives.

Oh, sorry Fran! A luau is a traditional Hawaiian party and feast. The main feature is almost always a roasted pig, as well as oodles of side dishes.

EDIT: Oh, and Anna, traditional filipino desserts usually include sweet rice cakes and coconut cakes. Which may work well for the luau theme...*ponders*

When I was in Vegas I had a drink called "The Hurricane". It was really yummy!!! Meyers dark rum, Malibu rum, pineapple juice, orange juice and a splash of pomigranite syrup served on the rocks.

Hmm, that might work well! We can just pre-mix it and pour it over ice to serve. Thanks!

I couldn't find anything that flew out at me dessert wise . As to drink I ditto ^^^^ ....any pineapple / grapefruit/ orage etc drink and rum is great .....either pitchers or freeze some juices and float a ring in a punch bowl . Sounds like quite a feast !!!

At my bookstore I have a book called "Hawai'i's Home Cooking: Local Recipes from Alu Like's Kupuna". Under the dessert section are: Applesauce Brownies; Banana Cream Pie, Prune Cake :p , Banana Delight Cake, Classic Carrot Cake, Banana Pie, Poppy Seed Cake, 'Ulu with Haupia, Sweet Potato/Haupia Delight, Tambong Tambong, Pumpkin Mochi, Bread Pudding, and Cereal Pumpkin Coffee Cake.

I would think that the brownies and cakes would hold up outside. I can send you any of the above recipes if interested.
