Baby gates are relatively inexpensive at places like Wal-Mart. I'd suggest getting two - stack them on top of each other, so you don't come home to discover you have a gate jumper and another piece of destroyed furniture.

I'm glad your mom is reconsidering. The fact is, what is done is done. Getting rid of a dog isn't going to fix the couch. What is important now is making sure nothing like that ever happens again.

oy i feel your pain! lol when we just got kenya, she DESTROYED my moms garden. my mom was SOOO pissed, she said that she HAD TO GO. my mom did calm down later and I did see her point of view, i didnt ask her before I brought kenya home and she does love her garden. Never made the mistake of giving kenya a chance to destroy anything ever again, dog safe rooms, baby gates, are a god send! lol

Baby gates at walmart are really cheap.. but most dogs, especially dogs the size of sawyer and keiko will jump it relatively easy, so careful with that.

and whoever said the "you cant afford the vet, cant afford the pet" thing... there are beautiful things called loans and credit cards. Im not going to give my dog away because I dont have lots of extra money laying around, if something were to happen, there is ALWAYS a way to deal with it. vets have payment plans also usually
You dont have to be rich to have a dog, or 2, or w/e, you just have to be prepared to do what you gotta do if you get hit with a vet bill

^^ Yep.

I'm not filthy rich. But my dogs are never deprived vet care. If they are sick, it comes first, even if it's the last dime of the week. And my vet bills have ran extremely high, but that never stopped me from ever paying them, or ever hesitating to get my dog to a vet when needed, and as often as needed.

Lucky for me it's only my MOM's dogs that destroy the house and aren't properly potty trained. So it's ME always getting mad at Her!

Anyway, good luck with Sawyer and Keiko! I think she'll cool down; especially if you do something to fix the problem like pick up a few crates on Craigslist or something. If you can, do some yard work for someone and get some money to fix or replace that couch :)

Same thing here. The dogs and cats have always come first when it comes to vet care. This is usually the reason I am "broke" is because I spent the last of my money on food and vet care. But its not like im living in a box with them. They are all healthy and happy. And I have a vet who has taken a rain check before on payments. So I am lucky in that aspect.

And thanks again guys for the support. I really expected to get flamed. But it was a mistake, one that will never happen again. Please keep sending vibes because my mom could change her mind.

Im sure she will cool down. Just the heat of the moment type of thing. Put another cushion on the couch, or a bored in between the 2 int he middle, make a table out of it lol.

If you are both broke, could you actually afford to keep the dogs?
Being broke nad not being able to affored a new couch is much different then afforeding dogs. Dogs are a known expense. No one just expect their couch to combust one dya, thus needing a new one. when she has 3 very healthy well looked after dogs. i doubt she will have a problem with vet bills.

You could say the same about me. Im broke. yet if a emergency happens. I WILL find the money. Even if I have to find a 2nd job, beg, borrow, or sell my junk. And Im sure the OP would do dthe same. a couch is much different random expense then a is dog.

If the doorway is just average sized and you have some minor carpentry skills you can probably get a door in there. You can get a cheap door or maybe a free one on craigslist if you put up a wanted ad. That should be nice and sturdy. I hope it goes well. Glad she's starting to simmer down.

Be careful with the baby gates.... My 7 lb dog can easily scale the tallest ones they make. Easily. I speak from experience. Luckily she doesn't chew or anything.

Hope everything works out for the best! I'd definitely find some way to crate/pen them while you're gone. If you leave Nard out by himself, he destuffs pillows.

Cider can scale all babygates, even the ones that are all plexi in the middle so they aren't climbable by kids..

She can climb the tallest x pens.. and chain link.

Smudge on the other hand sits on the other side of a badly propped up piece of 12" plywood and never tests it..

More Cider climbs stuff faster she gets at it.. She gets crated as she gets out of anything else I've devised.

If the issue would be jumping a baby gate and not climbing it, you can stack 2 on top of each other. I had to do that when I had a Min Pin. They are 10 dollars each at Wal-Mart

I tried that when Summer was jumping the baby gate clear. Then I discovered she can climb. :lol-sign:

I have some fun stories about trying to contain her without using her crate (since it makes her SA worse). I finally gave in and gave her run of the house since she was getting that anyways. The rest of mine would probably stay if you put a rope a few inches off the ground around them. *sigh*

I was surprised the MIn Pin never climbed them. He did eventually chew threw them, though

I doubt a lab would jump or climb two whole baby gates so if you can'ts find another alternative (Crating and whatnot) I'd go for that. Izzy isn't very big at all and she hops hers no problem. Good luck though! So glad your mom calmed down.

HAHA. You haven't met Enzo. ;) :D

She would probably chew through them, or try to first, and then climb/jump over. Oz can jump two without a running start. Not cleanly, of course, he latches on at the top and hauls himself over, but they can both do it. It's not impossible for a determined dog.

A piece of plywood or masonite, a couple hinges and a hook and eye clasp is what we used. 8 pointer lab puppies can take down just about anything else when they are close to a couple months old.

Thats the new plan. We're going to buy hinges this weekend and fashion some kind of door.

And I have the official okay to keep them all. With the understanding that if they chew up one more thing of my moms. That they will have to go.

So im going to be ultra vigilant from now on. Im really hoping we can get a door together this weekend.

I am so SO releived that I have anouther chance
