One day while my parents were on a work / vacation trip my brothers and I (at the time I think I was 17, middle bro was 15, youngest was 12) went over to our neighbors house who's dog had given birth to a litter of puppies about three months prior. We absolutely fell in love with one of them. She was a lab/rott mix. Well since the parents were gone we brought her back and hid her in the basement. Well that plan only lasted for about five seconds as the day they came back and walked into the house she immediately started barking and yelping for them to come play with her. She loved to be played with. Well after a LONG LONG LONG debate, my parents finally gave in and let us keep her. It was hard at first, she was so used to sleeping in a pack that at night she would bark and yelp and whine for hours on end. We finally broke her of that and started training her. We lived in the country so our road was pretty empty most of the time, but every once in a while it would see a substantial ammount of traffic. So, because all the other neighborhood dogs were allowed to roam the neighborhood we decided it wouldn't be in her best intrest to let her do that as well. So the training of yard boundaries began. We, my brothers and I, choose the road as the most realistic spot to start with. It is the most dangerous and we thought if she could learn not to run out there first, the rest should be easy. Well we spent the whole next week training her. We would bring her to the edge of the yard with a bag of treats and every time a car came we would tell her to sit and push her bum down. When she did and she stayed as the car passed we gave her a treat. Well one day when I was finished working a 16 hour day (Since i was in highschool I put most of my work hours in durring the weekend) I got a call from my dad right as I started walking up the drive way after my ride dropped me off. "Son?" "Yah dad I'm back, did spike mess in the house?" "Son, there was an incident today" *INSTANT TEARS* "What kind of...incident?" "Spike got out and instantly ran to the front yard and into the street. While she was sniffing in the street a car came by, she saw the car and sat instantly like you taught her, like a good girl. The car couldn't stop in time, and hit her" "Your brother tried to run after her when she got out, but she can clear two acres a lot faster than he can". "Where were YOU dad?" "I was at work son, it is ok, she went so quick. She did not feel a thing, I am so sorry"

Spike you were only in my life for a few months, some of the hardest months a dog's human companion can go through. I would not trade that time for anything. You taught me so much, and I am sorry I wasn't there for you when you needed me most. I am so sorry. You not only taught me a lot, but my brother learned a lot as well. He had to grow up a lot that day as he burried you in your favorite blankie all by himself. I have never quite been able to let go. I miss you so much. RIP

I'm so sorry about Spike. What a wonderful dog she was. Know in your heart that she will always be with you and is with all of our loved ones at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for us one day.

Rip Spike

So sorry to hear about your baby, Spike. Though her life was short, she was loved greatly, thanks to you. Sometimes things happen we have no control over. RIP Spike. Please be good to yourself, too, Metalhead! She would want that for you.
