Campho-Phenique

Every now and again I get cold sores... And if you get cold sores you know that the ones in the parts of your mouth that suffer from constant movement are _the_worst_. I dab some Camphi-Phenique on that puppy... And I'm not gonna lie to you

First it stings like the bejeezuz for about 2 seconds

And then that part of your mouth goes blissfully numb for a well deserved period of relief

And it tastes like Vapo-Rub smells for a few minutes too.

It's one of those things... It's seriously intense for a bit... but after the 2 seconds of sting theres that sensation of relief like the part of your mouth that hurts going all warm and fuzzy and then dissolving away into obscurity.

I've gone 3 days without... finally we went by the store and I was *NOT* leaving without some. All I could find was a tube with gel in it. I was really worried that this wouldn't be the same stuff. But it was. I'm very happy now :)

I don't think my wife would like it :)

No kisses for you for a while I bet. Not that you should be kissing with a cold sore anyway.

The combo of Listerine and Oral-jel helps me when I bite my lip and it ulcerates.

actually scratch that. I seem to just have the occasional canker sores

Cold sores do not usually occur inside the mouth, however if they do, it is most likely on the gums or hard palette (roof of the mouth).

If the lesion appears inside the mouth, especially on the soft tissue, it is most likely to be a canker sore, not a cold sore.
Small and out-of-sight, but painful, persistent and annoying. That's what canker sores, also called aphthous ulcers (aphthae), are for people who experience them. These shallow ulcers in your mouth can make eating and talking uncomfortable. They may occur on your tongue, on your soft palate, inside your cheeks or lips, and at the base of your gums.

Canker sores differ from cold sores in that they occur on the internal soft tissues of your mouth and aren't contagious. Conversely, cold sores almost always start out on the lips and don't often spread to the soft tissues of your mouth. In addition, cold sores are caused by a form of the herpes virus, making them extremely contagious.

Ewwwww, my dad suggested I dab some of that on the tips of my fingernails when I was habitually biting them. It was vile. I can't imagine putting it directly on/in my mouth!

I'll give you 15 bucks to swallow a pea-sized amount of it and not throw up.

yea.. um.. no thanks. but I'll give you a dollar to smell my finger :D hahaha

actually I'm just reading the labels:

"if swallowed get medical help or call a poison control center right away. Do not induce vomiting before contacting medical help or a poison control center" (bolding quoted, not added for any emphasis)

so, yea, thats why I added my disclaimer and tips on there :)

Yea! I called them cold sores until minutes ago when I went and found pictures of the two. I definitely get canker and not cold sores. Good to know mine aren't contagious!

Canker sores are very, very different from cold sores, not many people know that. Many also think that canker sores, and cold sores, are caused by the herpes virus and mistake that particular strain for the same virus as the genital herpes virus, which is also wrong. So, you see, through your suffering, you have educated many! Something good always comes out of something bad.

Glad you've found relief! Do you know what brought it on? I will get a canker sore if I eat too many acidy foods or too much salt. I'm not sure if it's related or just coincidence. I'll have to get some of that stuff, thanks!

Edited to add: I don't know if it's an old wives tale, or coincidence, but what has worked for me is a dab of toothpaste left on the canker sore over night! I usually disappears within 2 days.

I know exactly what brought it on. I was eating those straight pretzel sticks... the thin ones... and I somehow bit one wrong and it speared my front lip, down by the gums... and that ulcerated.
