i love dogs but when it comes to labs , welll every one says there just the best little family dogs. there not there really not the BEST. i love all dogs that incudles lab but the lab owners are just so MY LAB IS THE BEST KIND OF DOG ON THIS EATH AND ROTTS AND PIT ARE SO EVIL!! WHAT DO YOU THING ABOUT LAB OWNERS ARE THEY ALL THAT WAY OR ARE SOME NICE?

I get tired of hearing people say certain dogs are the best family dogs. We had a cockerspaniel when I was a baby and kid growing up. That dog was the best family dog. We had a mutt while my kids were growing up, that was the best family dog. We have Princess who adores everyone. When my oldest was 2 and I was pregant with my youngest my husband got a doberman, that was the best family dog. Has nothing to do with the breed. Now I hear my oldest say my grand daughter needs a lab, they make the best family dogs.
I happen to think labs ARE great family dogs....as you say, so are many other breeds. Maybe you're a little too hung up on the reputation of pits and rotties....ya know, not everybody thinks their evil. Actually, I personally don't know anybody that thinks that. YES, there is bad press.....but for other breeds as well....as it's been stated here over and over that those opinions are made by ignorant people.

I am the proud owner of a wonderful Chocolate Labrador Retriever named Mayberry, whom we've had for eight or nine years. I can't imagine life without her! May is a sweet, loving, WONDERFUL dog. She is so tolerant. We always joke that you could play tug-o-war with her ears and she'd just sit there wagging her tail. You could stick your face in her food bowl while she's eating and she'd lift her head out and give you a look that said, "Hey, that's uh....my food. Wanna share?" At times, she will sit there, and suddenly she will place her paw on my knee and look at me with such loving eyes. Eyes that tell me "Gosh, you're great." it may sound silly, but it's nice to know my baby appreciates me.
But yes, I do get tired of people saying labs are the best family dogs out there. Yes, they're awesome dogs, and I love my girl to death, but not all labs are as sweet and loving as she is. There are aggressive labs out there. There are ones that aren't as tolerant as Mayberry is. What bothers me most is that because they're so popular, and everyone says they're great family dogs, people go and buy a lab from a backyard breeder, expect it to be the perfect little angel without any training, and to tolerate anything and everything. And they don't even think about the fact that you can't just throw a lab into the backyard and expect it to be happy. You can't just let it out to go to the bathroom and assume that that's enough exercise for the dog. Labs are family dogs. They need to be inside with their family. They are eager to please, training is often very easy. They do require lots of exercise, but many are happy with just a game of fetch, or a walk to the corner, as long as they're with their human.

Look Spudy, lots of breeds have found their way to being the 'popular' dog of the month. Don't send me angry pm because lots of people on another forum said labs are great. I don't have anything to do with what that other forum discusses, so keep your anger there. YES...there are bad dogs in EVERY breed...I agree with that 100%. All I meant was that on THIS forum, we love pits and rotties. The people I know personally don't have problems with them. I understand you have a passion to take the stigma away from these breeds....just seems like you are reading posts somewhere else, then coming here and harping on the injustice of it all. WE KNOW there are ignorant people who don't understand pits and rotties. Don't ever send me a message again telling me I'm ignorant. There are lab owners here that think highly of their dogs, too. In reality, ask anyone what is the 'best' family dog, and they'll say it's the kind they own. NOW..go back to your other forum and vent your anger THERE.
I think all dogs can be good family dogs as long as they are in the right stituation. If you put a Lab or a Golden in a family that works all day, lives in an apartment, and has lots of valuable "chewables" laying around, a Lab wouldn't suit them at all. If you had a family who didn't want to walk a dog for long periods and didn't want dog hair everywhere, a Lab wouldn't suit them. But Labradors and other breeds at that, genreally fit into a "normal" families requirements.
And, BTW, I really hate your remark that Pitties and Rotties are evil. I've met a Pittie and do you know what it did to me and my 1yr old cousin and my 4yr old sis? It licked us to death. I've met a Rottie too. Do you know what it did to me? It sat on my lap and licked my face, and then it layed down by me and put its head in my lap and fell asleep. Really evil huh?
I've also met a Rottie/Chow mix that was abused. And do you know what that dog did to me? A dog that had been beaten and starved? She came up and wanted her belly scratched. If I had been beating and starved and left to die on the edge of a road, that would have been the last thing on my mind. Really evil dog huh?

It is just how certain people are. Everyone thinks their dog is a great breed or they would not have that breed of dog. There just happens to be a lot of lab owners out there so that is why you hear it so much.
There is a perfect breed of dog for everyone's tastes, activities, preferences, etc. The "perfect dog" is the particular dog that you have researched and come to the conclusion that it is the perfect dog for YOU, not for anyone else. The person buying the dog needs to know specifically what they want, and if they do, and they get that dog, then yes, they have the perfect dog for their individual tastes and activity level and preferences.
My perfect dog is Brady. He is an active dog, and I am an active person. I like big dogs, and he is big and loveable and cuddley. He has a lot of fur, but I don't mind because I have laminate flooring so I just sweep it up and I brush him every day. I have a crazy sense of humor, and so does he, which I just really lucked out with that.

I think labs can be overrated sometimes as the IDEAL family dog, they do have wonderful temperaments but they are so incredibly enthusiastic that they can be pretty overwhelming for very young kids. I totally agree with the statement above that having a good family dog depends a lot on the family itself!
what i ment to say is that some people think they are the best. thats okay. i dont think the are the best. and thats okay. some people mint say that chows are the best . thats okay. i have two rotts and had a pitbull. are mail lady hates pits! hates pits! so she made us give him away. she told me that pits and rotts are evil breeds she said that labs are the best of the best. not those words but very close . all that im asking is why do SOME( not all) people say that rotts and pit are evil when they have not even mit one? sorry about spelling!!! i love all dog breeds. just labs are not my fav becuase SOME people that own them say that they are the best and my dogs are bad or evil.

Spudy -- you sound very young in your postings (not sure how old you might be). Anywho, you are leaving some very good questions to answer. The stigma on Rotti's or Pit's is unbelievable. So if you've got one (or both) that is a good citizen, then it's up to you to help educate the public about why they are also great dogs... can you do that? That would be great...
I myself have a female rotty sasha and she is the calmest stupidest dog i have ever owned or met she will sit and give you her paw and like another member has said you could easily put your head n her food bowl and she would share i also have 2 cats that she adores and showers them with kisses, she often sleeps in bed with me and my 2 children i hate the stigma these poor dogs have it is all to do with how you bring them up i have aways thought of her as my child and not a dog rotties are known to be a very good family dog and after lots of research into the breed i decided she was for me and have never looked back.

I for one, wouldn't care what anyone else felt in the first place. Its my dog and tuff tawooties to them. lol I have a cocker spaniel and westie. Cockers are labled as snippy tempermental breeds also. Sadie is a loving family dog. She is excellent with my children, other pets and guests that visit. I've never had a problem with her.

I didn't know that about labs, it doesn't surprise me becuase there are so MANY labs out there. I wonder how it ranks with percentage of total breed population? Bite stats are pretty biased, also, they shows extremely high rates on rotties, shepherds, pits, things like that, but those are REPORTED cases...how often do you think people report vicious chihuahuas? I know they exist, at the clinic where I work the number of biting and aggressive chis and daschunds far outnumber any other breeds.
