people in this forum have opened my eyes that i should not leave my dog outside (thanks to squidbert and his/her links i have really good evidence to back me up on keeping my dog inside and some incentive for my parents) i was thinking of putting my dogs kennel in the kitchen at night and in the morning put it in the living room and leave it some space to roam about...but fence her off so as not to go to the kitchen, bathroom, or rooms...is it a good idea?? please give me some feedback and or advice
thanks (08

Yep, fencing them off I'm sure would work fine!

I'm so glad you've decided to move them indoors for when your not home. Much less risk involved inside a properly dog proofed home than being left outside, to all the elements, theifs and anything else that could possibly go wrong.

If you haven't had them inside much before, I'd probably fence them off on linoleum floors though, not on carpet, just in case there are any accidents!

:D Great decision!

thats DEFINATELY a good idea!!

YAYA Squidbert!!(she btw lol) Conforming one at a time! lol

its such a great idea to bring your dogs inside - especially when they aren't suprevised and left on a rope or in a kennel!!

Definately a good plan as to where you are putting your kennel - keep in mind if your dog isn't potty trained, I'd keep the kennel somewhere with NO CARPETS!! less to clean up :)

I'm glad Squiddy has given you great links and such to go off of! No dog should be left outdoors. There are WAY too many hazards that could happen - bitten by something poisonous, stolen, poisoned from other people, attacked by another animal etc etc etc...

So glad you have re-thought your ways :) Your dog will also thrive on being indoors with the people that he loves!

:D agree ^^

You can find cheap baby gates and second hand stores or garage sales or something - those usually do the trick ;)

Dont let people make your decision for you on how and where you r going to raise your dog. My family, before coming here to the usa, had dogs, and they NEVER set foot in the house. They were kept on a chain during the day, and let loose at night to roam the village and they survived all the elements just fine. If your dog is worth his breed, he wont be stolen, atleast without a fight and making some noise for you to hear. BUT, to each his or her own. I know that it is stupid to keep a dog like an american bulldog outdoors as they dont grow the coat suitable enough to withstand the elements, but i know that when i get my co, soon as she hits 8-10 months, she will be spending about 95% of her time outside, as that is where they truly want to be in the first place.

Maybe you should wear a winter coat and have someone tie you outside for a few nights and see how you feel about it.

I do believe his dog is of the small foofoo kind (no offense intended). "worth its breed" does NOT mean defending itself.
And an outside dog is one thing, one left to roam is another.

Aww.. I'm all blubbery and in tears now! I'm so glad you took the post I made seriously and I'm SO happy your pupper will be indoors and comfy! Outside all the time is NO place for a chi-mix to be.. they're so itty bitty and fragile.. Plus they need to be with the people they love.. :)
Like Roxy and Summer said no carpet is the best bet for cleaning.. pee cleaning is no fun on carpets.. :p
Good luck with everything.. keep us updated and don't hesitate to ask for any more info.. there are SO many people here that are great sources of info on pups! ;)

Good job, all! Love having new people like Betoski come here with an open mind and learning something new :)

Outside, alone is just no place for a dog - no matter how rough 'n' tough it is! Your dog wants to be with you and the rest of his family, after all, and there are way too many hazards out there that even the smartest, strongest dog is vulnerable to. People can be cruel, petty and just plain heartless. And don't forget about the spectre of lawsuits if your dog is outside unsupervised and anything happens!

Even Orion never left his CO out unsupervised, and I don't leave my Filas outside when I'm not there! Even on 60 acres!

Holy!! Calm down! LOL

I definitely do not lick my dogs ass... I know of a few people that kept their dogs chained up outside, and it's proven that chain=aggression a large percentage of the time. Especially in suburbia.

It sounds like you lived somewhere EXTREMELY rural, if you let your dogs roam at night, here your dog would get hit by a car...

With great pleasure. And I hope animal control is able to find good homes for your dogs when they're picked up on the street.

Woah! Eeeeasy guys no need to get ina tiff here. And admins no need to call my boyfriend an @$$hole either whether it was done publicly or not I do know it was done!

Anyways I did want to mention there is nothing wrong with keeping a dog outside so long as his needs are met. All Mike was saying was in reference to the OP to not let other people make his decisions, and to make them based on what the owner thinks is best for his dog and that dogs can be kept successfully outside. So for the record since the comment was made, BOTH his dogs are currently kept in the house!!! Anyways back to what I was talking about, my boys can and are kept outside successfully because they are built for it, prefer it, and I make the extra effort to still give them plenty of attention like an indoor dog gets. They also do get to come inside every day they just don''t live inside.

Now keeping them outdoors isn;t a matter of fencing in the yard and shoving them out there. Their kennel cost a grand total of approximately $700-$1000 and that''s cheap considering the doghouses I happened to get for free since they were both used. It is designed very particularily all in the best interest of the dog (s) that live within it. The kennel in the summer is different from the kennel in the winter too. You need to tailor the kennel or yard to the need and specifics of your dog and yur dog''s breed. You need to know what they can and can''t handle and alter things to suit it. Even a toy poodle can be kept successfully outside if you tailor the kennel so NO animals or people can get inside, you have a heated doghouse, and a bunch of other stuff that they need since they aren''t exactly designed for the outdoors.

That previous post was from your boyfriend?? It sounded like he wanted to stir things up. I can appreciate the fact of a dog being outside if they WANT to be OUTSIDE... and that DOESN'T mean 24/7. My golden used to LOVE to go outside in the winter and lay on a snowpile and sun himself... for about a 1/2 hour... but KNOWING he would come back in the house anytime he darn well pleased. My lab, on the other hand, HAS to be inside at all times and can't stand to be away from family. It all depends on the dogs and the dogs' wishes. His dog roaming the village could be his dog's "wish", but is just an invitation to be shot or hit by a car (very irresponsible).
