I too don't understand sorry

How could he get caught in a tree if you are walking him on leash?

And needing the collar for identification is an excellent point.

I am glad your dog is ok

how might the dog get killed next time? was he hanging in the tree? if your dog might be at risk in some way, you might want to find a better collar...

Make sure the collar is tight enough, and make sure you always have an eye on your dog when he is outside - if you have a fenced yard and leave them there alone, remove his collar.

Is his collar very loose? Generally speaking it should be adjusted so that you can slide 2 fingers beneath it. It was probably just a rarity that he got caught on a branch and luckily you were with him.

I''m with your friend, burn the collar LOL Honestly I only ever use a collar when we''re training (even then only sometimes - depending what I''m training for) or when we leave the property. Way too many horror stories of strangulations, broken jaws when dogs are playing, etc.

while on a walk
If you were walking your dog and its collar caught on a branch wouldn't you reach down and get the collar off?? How would your dog die if you were right there.. I dont get it

You were on a walk and your dog's collar got caught on a tree branch?

Was he on leash or loose? How well-fitted was the collar? It should be snugly fitted and not hanging loosely. I wouldn't recommend walking him without a collar with identification.

I take my dogs out into the woods all the time with collars on and I've never had one get caught on a tree branch, so I think the likelihoods of this happening again are pretty low. And if you're right there, if it does happen you should be able to release your dog before he dies.

Leather has a tenacy to stretch..Get a nylon collar or use a slip lead. My dogs rarely wear collars. I do have collars for them though.

Lena never wears a collar generally, only when I want to use the leash do I also put her collar on.Nothing much can go wrong then. You leave the collar loose enough to slip it on and off easily.

Um, just supervise your dog when the collar is on. He won't die if you're right there with him. :p

If you're just a pyromaniac then go ahead and burn it, lol. I would personally get him microchipped if he isn't going to be wearing a collar.

Come on folks !!! We hopefully know what to do. There are many adjustments on a collar.... Chip always wears a rolled leather collar outside, but it's loose... I buckle and put over his head...if he even got caught up on something, he could pull it off. Any collar that could be a noose ( chain or nylon ) is a no-no unless for training. Let's use our brains.... to me nylon is stronger than leather and under stress won't break. I feel a rolled collar is easier for them to pull off too .
