Exactly, I hate the wear and tear on my hands. A large percent of my clients come in for basics and *leash* skills and then hand me a chain leash and I want to cry. I loathe handling these and yes! I have yet to meet a chain leash having dog with manners.

If I could confiscate them I'd send them your way Star. LOL

Most, if not all, the trainers around here do NOT accept chain leashes in classes.

I don't even like nylon anymore. I've become a little spoiled with leather lol.

I'm a total leash snob, I usually change the leash over to one of mine if I am handling or training another dog. It is also for safety not just comfort because so many people have crappy quality leashes with die cast chrome snaps that can break apart easily, I know my leashes have solid brass snaps that cannot be broken, so I always prefer to use mine.

Nylon feels so awful in your hands especially if the dog pulls suddenly!

Nothing beats a good quality leather leash!! :)

What drives me absolutely NUTS are people with pitbull on thee GIANT chains. Those thing are maybe 2 ft long and weight 8-10 pounds. They're ridiculous. I've seen them for sale at both Petsmart and Tractor Supply :wall:

I have all these old Nylon leashes...I use them basically if we go to the lake and I'm walking dogs back through the parking lot on leash and don't want my leather ones to get all muddy and soaked...but even then, I miss my leather.

Regarding the chain leashes: I did know one woman whose dog was a hardcore leash biter. Couldn't get her to focus at all (okay she's not exactly a good trainer but she meant well and the dog really is talented, just a bit of a snarky a**, like all many of the good dogs are, and rather under-handlered)...borrowed a chain leash, let the dog grab it, dog didn't like it...next time brought dog out on regular lead, dog tried to grab lead, stopped everything and switched to chain. Dog took one look at chain, didn't grab, and when rewarded with getting to use her regular leash again, looked hard at her leash, at the chain leash on the floor, and made a decision...last time I saw her (a year later) she hadn't had any relapses. Somewhat unique dog and situation, but I guess there's a time and place for everything...

Like the big logger chains? And yeah, those are kinda...crazy. I mean...why? Can't be comfortable to hold, or have hang from your neck...

I used a chain leash on Gambit one day, when it was a potty emergency and I couldn't find a regular one. The constant jingly-slidy noise the leash made stressed him out to the point where I ended up taking it off and letting him go.

I've used a chain leash. The dog i had when tied up out front of a show would chew through the normal lead to follow..chain worked
I use a check chain for training only, my dog is otherwise in a leather flat collar.

I will be buying a ecollar for my girl and she will wear it majority of the time, doesnt hurt her, no different to her flat collar.

Personally i dont care what others use on their dogs, providing its not outright cruel

As someone who's seen long term e collar use, keep a close and regular eye on te prong area of the neck. move the box often and be sure it's not too tight too long. I have no beef with e collars but ive seen prolonged use leaving sores and leasions too often.

Opps,I was going to say the dog I walk has a chain leash, with a leather handle it's very thin and light so it's not a problem however it is'nt very practical when you want to shorten the lead at times,my instinct was to wrap it round my hand...and that HURT!I would'nt use one personally.

I'm not a fan of chain leashes. We used to have one for a former dog of mine and I ended up injured good one day when she got the sudden urge to pull. I don't like how jingly they are and they are too heavy feeling in my opinion.

I LOVE my leather leash and prefer to mainly use leather. I do have some basic nylon leashes as well for rainy days since I dont like using my leather in bad weather. I tie knots in my nylon leashes to have spots to grab when I need to shorten the leash so that the nylon doesn't slide and hurt my hand if my dog decides to pull.

I own a dog who wears a choke chain as a regular collar. the rings are simply zipped together so it can't tighten.
I was slightly nervous for a second, as a year or two back a families Sheltie went missing. They offered a huge reward, took out big ads in the newspapers, had fliers plastered everywhere. Everyone in 6 towns knew about them and this missing dog, and it went on for months but they didn't give up. They found the dog, the choke collar had gotten stuck and the dog had apparently strangled itself trying to get free.

The reason I will never put a choke chain on my dogs.

Oh, and on to the point at hand. Hate chain collars, hurt my hand, although I don't find them ugly I do find them... odd. Like, your dog is so strong you need metal to hold him back? Haha.

I use nylon leashes. I'm a vegan, so I don't use leather. If anyone know of nice faux leather leashes I am interested, as the nylon can hurt my hand too.
