Okay, I went to Petsmart to get Lizzie a Martingale collar and ask my trainer is she could give the CGC test (which they have not done that for over 2 years now!)(just my luck :( !!!!!!) and I am standing there talking to her and she ask how old I am so I tell her that I am 13 and she told me they only if I was 16 I could help her and be a part time trainer for Petsmart!!!!!! :yikes:

I was almost in tears b/c that is my DREAM JOB and now I cannot do it!!!!!!!!!! :(

Well, I guess in a way I am happy too because I did not know that you had to be only 16 to be a trainer!!!!! So now in 2 and 1/2 years I am going to be a trainer at Petsmart!!!! Yeah!!!!! :D

Not so much that you have be 16 to be a trainer, you have to be 16 to be able to work at all.

I'm sure you'll be a great tainer when the time comes ;)

At some places because my friend jsut started Life Guarding and she is only 15!

I STILL cannot believe that I was not able to do it and that in less than 2 and a half years I can be a Certified trainer and Petsmart!!! :)

Start reading a bunch of good books now! And finding as many people to help you get some hands-on experience before then!

Nothing at all against you Lizmo (and quite a few kids here on Chaz), but the idea of at 16 year old conducting training classes...*shudder*

I know! It is young but I know that I could do it!!! And my trainer is REALLY good!!! So that helps! :p

Lizmo,
I bet one day you will be doing what you love.:)

But, sorry for my post if it sounds negative after this.....

But how can petsmart hire a 16 year old as a certified trainer?
I am sorry but I have more experience with dogs than the trainer has been on earth.......
I am not really trying to be negative but petsmart should spend the money to hire an experienced trainer that has experience and has proven themself in the field of training. Then if a helper is needed that could be a job for an entry level position.
People pay money for these classes, they should get an instructor that has been proven.
I have also heard horror stories of petsmart trainers......
Maybe you could find a mentor and volunteer with a reputable breeder in your area.....just to get your foot in the door.??

What I don't understand is where did the CGC come into this ? To give or take the test ?

Aw, whaat a great oppurtunity! I was instructing a few training classes every now and then since I was 14, though, and sometimes it isn't all it is cut out to be. I'd much rather be training and having fun with my own dogs. :D

I really hope she isn't. 15 is too young to get fully certified as a life-guard. IIRC, 16 is the minimum age for Bronze Cross and I'm very certain 17 is minimum age for NLS certification. You could squeak by at a private pool with bronze cross - but you'd only be considered 'in training' in anything like a municipal pool. At least, that's how it worked when I was life-guarding.

Oh I know but I think that she only ask me because she knew how much I love training dogs and that I know a lot about dog training and would make a good trainer.

I am not sure if you are certified trainer but I would asume so?!?!?!

You have to be at least 16 to work their I am not sure if that would be a trainer or she just ask because she knew that I would be only a part time trainer!

And some trainers are bad at petsmart (I have run into a few) and some are good and the two that I have had know a LOT about training and owning and caring for a dog!!!

Grammy, I wanted to take the CGC test with Lizzie soon and was going to go through Petsmart because I thought they did it but now I found out they did not! :(

I have already done classes for other people in training their dog and are doing some now and are going to start a new one soon and everybody that does them says that I am really helpful in training their dog and helping them train there dog and would recommend me to any one who needs there dog trained!

So I know that that is young but if I know what I am doing and she does too what is wrong with it! Yes some people should not be training at 16 but what about the people like me who know how to train a dog and want to do it at petsmart?

It is at a private pool and she was a certified babysitter through Blue Cross Blue Shield I think!?!?!?!

My trainer's daughter, who has her junior handler's title and has run some qualifying runs is 13, I believe, and "helps" at our agility classes. Basically she oversees sequences of obstacles, but for any "real" training, I would definitely go to her mother, without a doubt. Erin is a nice kid but her mother is the one offically recognized as "teacher".. probably would not pay for a class that was put on by someone younger than 20, tbh, and maybe not even then.

And that would be fine if they wanted the other trainer to do the class but I know some are not going to care and should it not be based on the knowledge the trainer has not the age???

I know what you mean. I hold more knowledge than my trainers, albeit, I am only 16 years old. But, ..proves age doesn't always mean more knowledge.

With that said, that is usually the case. The older you are, generally the more experience you have. The more experience, hopefully teh more knowledge you will have. ;)

I'm sure your friend is very competant - but personally I wouldn't trust a 15 year old to dive in to the deep end of a pool and perform a pia (sp?) carry on anyone - let alone a male adult. I would be very concerned about the place that would hire someone that young for such a position, in all honesty.

This is just my opinion - but enjoy the free time you have now. Once you start working, you won't ever get the same amount of free time you have now, again.

Not when I know I have more life experience and general knowledge than the person teaching me! Hate being talked to like I'm stupid, especially by someone younger.. but that's just me. I don't know - were I in my fourties and had a 16 year old teaching me... you would be hardpressed to tell me that that 16 year old has more knowledge than me..... I dunno, but I have always found it a little degrading for 35+ yr old people who have been around the block and know how things are done to be taught by a fresh faced youngster...

OT - Andrew, your photos are phenomenal. Was going to comment on Flickr but didn't want to out my horrible photography! ;)
