Roman has NEVER in his life stolen our stuff off the counter, despite the fact that he is a big dog (27") and could totally reach up there. But nary a steak has gone missing. He never steals anything of ours (even when he was a pup, I can only remember him stealing/wrecking one or two small items).

HOWEVER. Sometimes I have to take one of his toys away and I put it on a counter or table or something. Usually, after an hour or two he will very discreetly (but in plain view if need be), calmly walk up and retrieve it. Like "excuse me, but with all due respect, this actually belongs to me." It's so cute.

LOL. Chevelle is like that. You can put a plate of food down right in front of her and she will look at you like "I want to, I really do... But I know this is yours and I'm not supposed to have it." Or when she is on the bed, she continually looks at you like "Is okay that I'm still up here? I can get down if you want...". She won't even take things that are hers, though when I have them. She just gives the eyes like "Can I have...my toy...please? It's cool if you still want it, but I really like it and all..."

Aww Chevelle sounds like a total sweetheart :). Renee, do you mean the others will just take what is theirs? Or they totally respect your countertops? I'm tempted to put his toy near a steak on the counter to see if he can resist :p but I know if it ain't broke you shouldn't try to fix it. If he got started with thieving nothing would be safe lol.

They (read, Kharma mainly) are totally literal. If I don't say " leave it, it's mine, don't even think about it" and name it, it's the "you said not to touch the counter and I didn't, I never touched THE COUNTER," or "you said leave the bread alone; you didn't say anything about the cheese."

Tallulah's pretty good, but there are some things, like peanut butter on anything, that she cannot fathom weren't meant for her.

That's cute! Aren't dogs muy inteligente? Actually, your dog is simply appreciating the toys you bought.
