Didn't want to derail the other thread. But so far, I've noticed RedPup has a humping... problem. He doesn't consider it a problem and neither does Ozzy, but it's bothering me.. Oz ignores it, and I make him stop.

He mostly humps Oz, but he has tried to hump me. I put him in a time out for a minute or so, and then let him out. This is a nine week old pup here, doing this. I don't know what to do about it, or whats causing it.. Should we go ahead and have him neutered? Or just wait it out?

Does timeouts work with dogs?
I have been pondering this for a few weeks now..
You mean, just in general? Yes, timeouts are the preferred "punishment" recommended on this forum.

At 9 weeks, this is certainly not a sexual behavior. Pretty much any humping done with a female who is not in heat is not sexual. I don't think it'll be very effective to neuter your dog right now, it would probably be better to wait a few more months to get that done.

The humping is probably the puppy trying to figure out his place in your "pack." When he's humping Ozzy, the best thing to do would probably be to put him in a time out. Just put him anywhere where he can't come into contact with Ozzy, and let him stay there for about 3-5 minutes.

That's sorta funny. Human toddlers sometimes masturbate or hump things. Maybe it's the same kind of thing. He's just... discovering his sexuality? I dunno lol. Sorry.

The pup is trying to establish it's position within the pack. That includes how he ranks with you it will only get worse unless you channel the energy somewhere productive. That is not a "time out." Sit is productive , down the same, come, heel, kennel (on a place board.) To keep treating the pup as if it is a baby human will lead to bigger problems. Altering the pup now may put a band-aid on the problem, but it will rob the pup of developmental growth hormones. This is a control issue please address it as such.

Milo tried to hump my leg once as a pup. I said "NO" and put him a "timeout". Basically just made him sit and praised him once he was sitting. He never tried it again.
