I pronounce it Doxund.

I know a lot of people pronounce it Dash-Hound (if they know that much of the name). I think there is a video on youtube about pronunciation. I forget what its called though... Mr. Wenerstichel or something like that.

When I had a dachshund, I always pronounced her as a dak-sund, and when people said "what?" I said weiner dog. Regardless, of the pronunciation of dachshund, EVER
YBODY knew what a weiner dog was...lol

A lady I used to work with had a real "local" dialect. She called them "daish hounds". She also said "solsbry" for Salisbury (like Salisbury steak). Sebendy for seventy, and lots of other fun things.

Docks-Hund. Thats the right way to me, and most American Doxie owners atleast. And thats how its been said to me. (My mother and grandmother have always had dachshunds)

One pet peeve of mine is when people spell it wrong (Which i see on Craigslist often) or when they pronounce it "Dash-Und".

I just say Doxies and leave it at that. :p

Of course, I could get some of the good ole southern folks around my neck of the woods to give you a pronunciation tutorial.

'Round these parts they're called Dot-sunds. No kidding. Like the freakin' cars. Datsuns.

Of course, rotties are called Rockwilders and pitties are called Pet Bulls....so go figure.

I was also informed not too long ago that I own a Great Dame, not dane. Derrrr.

OK my brain hurts now (doesn't take much) I've spent the last 10 minutes pronouncing it every conceivable way.

I think I say Dacks un
but that might have more to do with my Yorkshire accent!
I'll stick to sausage dog from now on

This is my first post--I'll go introduce myself in the proper place later.

I can give a definitive answer on this question--which may be the first time in my life that I have been able to do so in an internet forum!

First, the word is--as with most German breed names--a combination of a description of the dog and the German word for dog, "hund". "Hund" is pronounced something like "hoont" (but don't make the "o" so long; think "roof" rather than "moon".) The word "dachs" is pronounced "dox", or close enough, and means "badger". So a Dachshund, or "doxhoont", is a "badger dog".

Now, while the proper pronunciation is close enough to "doxhoont" for you to use that, the term "Dachshund" is seldom used. I've read it several times, but I have NEVER heard any German actually use the term. Ever. They all say "dackel" (pronounced "dockel").

So if you want to go around being pretentious and call the dog what German speakers call it, you say "dockel".

Of course, the best thing is just to go on calling it whatever you called before, and forget about trying to be "authentic".

(Does anyone else remember that SNL sketch where a group of newsroom people were ordering take-out and pronouncing everything in "authentic" Spanish?)

By the way, "Dackel" just means something like "Dachshundie"--you know, a little Dachshund.

Anyway, that's my first post. I hope I haven't scared you all away from future discussion with me.

:D

My dachshund owning latin teacher sent it to me. It will answer all of your questions concerning pronunciation.

I think enough people have suggested the correct way of pronouncing it.. However, I just thought I must add.. Like my biggest pet peeve..

Regis is often called by people a corgee. "Oh look a pretty corgee." *sigh* "Well, Corgi, but yes."

Obviously those are all wrong, the correct pronunciation is wee-nerr-dog.
:lol-sign: that was great!!!

On this topic, I once ran into the hunter (somehow hunting areas in Germany have a designated hunter, no idea what that is about) while out mushroom hunting. He told us we needed to get out of the woods ASAP bc there was an injured boar somewhere that could be very dangerous. He had a giant (and I mean like something out of the movies giant) wire haired dachshund that he was using as a blood trailer to find the boar. Totally wierd and true. A real working doxie, but he was nothing like any dachshund I've ever seen in this country!

You'd love the reactions I get when asked what kind of dog Kharma is and I say "Fila Brasileiro."

Evidently that translates roughly to: "yahwhateverujistsed."
