I am documenting this area as just lately we have dealt with a puppy mill and or back yard breeder; With and justification I ask that all pet purchaser do their research prior to purchaing any dog and or any puppy offered for sale;

1) Ask questions
2) Do not send funds until a full written contract received
3) Never ever accept excuses
4) Be sure to take puppy to vet as soon as received. No latter than 48 hrs even if received on a sat.
5) Make sure that you document everything from the time you received doggie and or puppy. Never miss a thing.
Contact breeder once all findings received. Never accept a replacement puppy always demand full refund and or any vet costs attached. Therefore we can take the time to ensure that the puppy miller know we are sick and tired of receiving ill dogs and or puppies that have not been well taken care of from the origanal owner. As well let them all know that we will persue the legal actions where as closing their facility down. A dog is to be a true committment and no one should use it strickly for finacial gain. They are living breathing freinds that deserve a great life and not one attached with a male dogs you no what stuck up there every heat. So please use your buyer beware and if that red flag jumps up in your face then run like crazy. We all have a soft spot for pups and dogs and if we stop look and listen then we can get some of these places shut down for good and let the true professionals do what they know best

6) If buying your dog feels anything like buying a shirt online, then run in the opposite direction! (I.e., you see something cute, add it to your cart, provide payment and the dog/shirt is shipped to you)

They will never end unless people just don't buy from them , and this will never happen. I would say that MOST people decide they want a " purebred " puppy and look up their newspaper ads. Luckily here the 3 TV channels have " education " through the local Humane Society . More and more homes have dogs today . However my Ollie was bred and why he ended up in a Humane Society is a mystery .....their outcast ... my gain.

I agree with all of you, I have a back yard breeder in my street. It disgusts me that these lab dogs are used entirely for breeding and for the money in the owners pocket. What would happen to these poor pups if dog lovers like us didnt buy them!!!! At least if folk buy them 90% of them will go to a good home. Maybe I wrong! I hear that if we stopped buying from such people we could wipe them out. I have spoke to SSPCA in Scotland about these dogs but what they do is not illegal and the dogs do have outdoor kennels. I think unless the law changes on this matter we can do nothing but hope to the bottom of our hearts that the puppies have a better life than their parents do. It breaks my heart cos these particular dogs are due to pup in two weeks, they get hardly any human contact and are left outside, fair enough in a kennel but I believe dogs are part of the family and should be treated like any family member. I feel like taking all the pups but obviously I would probably be jailed for doing so. If only we could have some law changes on such horrible folks. Makes me feel so angry.

I agree - there needs to be actual legislation in place before we see a change in or (maybe one day!) an end to BYBs and puppy mills. And such a law would be so simple - no breeding without a license, no breeding without proof that this is a service that cannot be obtained by an already established breeder (for example - no more than two breeders of Labs within a certain mileage, perhaps) and no selling dogs to buyers without a signed consent saying that the puppies will not be used to breed and will be speutered immediately that they turn the correct age, unless they are intended for showing, in which case they could be fined for having a litter later, should that happen. There should be fines for people being caught having litters without a license, and part of that fine being an instant spay/neuter for their dog. And, importantly, an undertaking to visit and make sure that all registered breeders are upholding the legislation and that their dogs are being treated humanely and properly in suitable environs.

And I honestly think it would not be hard to uphold such legislation because most people who breed `just one litter' for profit etc, would not be bothered to go through all the hassle required to breed. It would really weed out the BYBs from the responsible, ethical breeders.

But it will never happen. I mean, you cannot put licenses on people having babies (and honestly, I wish you could sometimes) and if the rights of children are not protected in such a way, you can be sure the rights of cats and dogs from irresponsible owners `breeding' willy nilly will not be protected, either.

In 2003 I went to my Town Council and placed a 10 page request as to the by-laws in our Town. Many of our Councilors did not realise how bad it has gotten out there. It is time that we all get together and state to them that we have had enough. No more puppy mills wanted.

In 2000 we shut down one of the most horenduos miller her in the Windsor Essex area. This guy was a freak. Freak of all freaks to be assured:spam:
He would go out to all registered breeders and plead his cause. Stating that the dogs would be well cared for. That he would give them a litter back or some way of getting the dogs for 0 $. They would get bred be assured of that but if you did not want to pay his price. He'd state to you well I would get this EAT THE DOG FIRST!!!! Major sicko There were alot of other issues that this freak would do but do to the grafic's I will not disclose them. It would turn your stumack up side down

When the Town ship he lived in found our how many dogs he had he had a certian time to remove them. He at that time had 400 dogs. Well within time the dogs would be shuffled out to freinds of his. He would offer to supply food for the dogs. Then he had the Township come in and inspect. Well clean bill of health recieved. Okay within 1 month all of the dogs were back. The so called ethical breeder then stated that he had a loaded 22 shot gun awaiting the Police Services and or he would take it in his hands to go to the Town council and blow them all away if they attempted to take his doggies away again.

This was reported to the Mayor personally and you know what he said " Oh Okay we will have to send him a letter"! Stupid is as stupid comes

So off went the letter and so did the puppy miller. Go figure he would sell a dog to a wise individual and she would then go to the Police Services in the new Township. We all got together and shut his sorry Hum down.:D

When it came to going to court he would plead get this ( GUILTY DO TO INSANITY) SO HE RECEIVES A SLAP ON THE HAND AND SENT ON HIS WAY. SO IT IS UP TO US TO STOP THE MADDNESS IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO GET INVOLVED.
