As I'm sure you've all heard that I was attacked by a dog on Saturday. Well it turns out the other dog he was with is still around. Hayden's been out looking for it a few times, but it's really skittish. We saw it near our house one day, and you could its ribs! Its also been bit by something, because we've found blood in the bushes and tall grass on our property.

Anyway, AC will just come take it and most likely put it to sleep. :S I don't like the way our AC works, so I want to see if I can get it before we really have to call animal control.

Is there anything we could do for the poor thing?

You could try a live trap but I don't know where you could find one... it might have to be quite large depending on the size of the dog. Is the animal shelter separate from AC where you are? Can they help?

But at the same time, if the poor dog has been hit and is bleeding, it might be really hurt... maybe having him caught by AC and put to sleep would be a good thing as opposed to dying slowly, either by the injury or starving to death. If you see it again and it looks like it's limping or not getting around very well, I think I'd call AC... =< Poor little guy (or girl!)

I've never caught a dog that would not come, I use food and such to get them to come and then put a leash on them. With a scared dog though you'd have to use a trap of some sort, either a live trap or trap him in the garage. Leave food in your garage or a shed or something with a door. Do it the same time every night. Then when you see him in their close the door. The only problem with a garage is that the sound of the door closing could really freak him out. If you are in the garage with him though and do not close the door you could still try tossing him yummy stuff and since he has less places to escape to he may spend more time with you and start to trust you more. I would call AC but mine would not put him down right away. There are also some shelters that rent out live traps to people so they can catch loose dogs and such so see if there is one near you that does that.

I would try leaving it some food where you have seen it. It will learn your smell from the food gradually bring the food closer to your house kinda trail it along. It will take some work but if you can't get a live trap and it's skittish. It might be worth a try. Best of luck to you and the poor dog.

I've had to help catch two basically feral dogs as an animal control officer. One was very interested in other dogs, and started to do early morning visits to a husky that lived tied out. After several weeks of sightings, everything came together and we were able to get a rabies pole on him.

The other was completely non interested in other dogs, but was sort of comfortable in the presence of her foster mom. The dog was out loose for about a week in the worst of our winter weather, and was getting fairly weak. We basically ended up walking her into exhaustion by following her in the deep snow until the foster mom was able to grab her collar.

You could try a Hav-a-Hart trap if you can find a large one, but I've never had luck using them on dogs.

its hanging around on the outskirts of our property, and a few times we've seen it on our porch, but minute she even hears Hayden turn a page in his book it runs for the heavens.

Hayden built the weirdest contraption. It's made of Dre's old crate (wire mesh), and the minutes somethingis inside it it flies shut and a wooden board falls against it to stop it from opening again.

We're going to try it tonight, hopefully we get the dog and not a coon.
