I free-feed Katie. I did when she was that small as well. I think it needs to go by your pup. If you put food down do they eat til its gone, or until theyre full? If they eat the food just b/c its there, I would say at least feed them 3 times a day. Also look at the recommendations on the food.

I feed my 9 weeks old mini schnauzer 3 times day. He is not a big eater. I am thinking of cut his lunch so he can eat more at the dinner

At least three times a day. Puppies have small livers and it is hard to continously produce the insulin without a frequent food source.

As far as worming, I always go with the vet, some dogs have bad reactions to OTC worming medications.

When Gunner was a pup he was 'free fed'. When he hit 5 months I started giving him one big meal in the morning (when we get up). Usually 7-8 cups total and he'd get "snacks" throughout the day. If he doesn't finish his meal in the morning, he has until 9pm to eat it before I pick it up (less chance of accidents that way). Tira was free fed as a pup and young adult as well. Now she gets 4-5 cups in the morning (trying to get her to loose 5 lbs) and some 'snacks' during the day.
Snacks are - dog biscuits, pup-corn or some leftovers (veggies/bread) from dinner.

3-4 times a day is best for pups that small...

As far as worming goes, Safeguard is a great one. It's safe and the exact same stuff the vet prescribes...

I would still recommend you let your vet run a fecal test though just in case Coccidia is present. It's a different type of parasite that requires a different medication.

That young of a pup should be fed 3 meals a day minimum.

What breed did he bring home?

Do you know what type of food he'll be feeding them?

My 95 lbs. lab, Charlie only get 3.5 cups of food a day.....and he is perfect weight....(maybe 1 or 2 pounds overweight if your critical, Lol)

My 70 lbs. lab, Shiloh only gets 3 cups of food a day... and she is a little chubby now....

My 65 lbs. German Shepherd eats a total of 4.5- 5 cups a day.....She is very active, thin, and a high metobolism....

What food do you feed? That sounds like a great deal....
And when I say a cup, I mean a level 8oz dry measuring cup...
Just curious......

For pups that young, I'd stick with Pyrantel. (Nemex-2) Of course, if you suspect whipworm, then use the Safe-Guard.
I feed my pups 3X a day, but they are now 13 weeks. 1/2 cup of food, mixed with about 2 cups of water. I'll continue with 3X a day, until they're about 6 months, and go to 2 times a day, which is how often the adults get fed.

Just a note in regarding to feeding "x cups" per day:

Different foods have different caloric contents and can range from around 250 kcal to 650+ kcal per cup, so you can not compare food X to food Y without looking at caloric content.

The higher the caloric content per cup, the less you need to feed to meet your dog's/puppy's caloric need.

Up to 6 months of age, a puppy should be fed 3 times a day.

3 times.

I read somewhere that you should feed them 3 times a day until 9 months of age.
I hope I helped.

i free feed, my dogs are grazers...my family has always free fed and never had a health problem...even my 12 yr old dane was free fed and never a problem. ive found if you free feed from day one MOST dogs will graze (much better for toy breeds) rather than gorge themselves or "inhale" their food.

of course schedual feeding is much easier for housebreaking...
if your schedual feeding at 7 weeks id do 3-4 meals a day and keep a close eye on them for hypoglycemia (espeiclaly being yorkie and chi in that mix)
