I think the last time my puppy (12 months old, Border Collie mix) had her worm vaccination was late last year/early this year. She got all her vital shots and stuff done by the RSPCA and then we took her to puppy classes at the vets and they made sure we did them until she graduated. I've noticed that she has fleas, and I don't want to keep giving her that stinky every-three-weeks stuff, is there any you can recommend that you only have to use every couple of months?

Well, if she has fleas then she needs to be dewormed for tapeworms now. Fleas = flea eggs which = tapeworms. You can purchase tradewinds dewormer online (same active ingredient that your vet will prescribe) or take your dog to the vet. It wont do any good though if you don't treat for fleas at the same time. The best flea products out there are Advantage, Advantix and Frontline. Don't use any of the ones from the grocery stores, they are made of strong chemicals and they DON'T work!

As far as routine deworming after that it really depends on the dog. I like to deworm with fenbendazole every 6 months just for the heck of it.

usually by administering monthly heartworm tablets is good enough to treat certain worms. I use heartguard which helps with internal parasites and take a stool sample in often to the vet. As far as fleas go I have never had a dog that had them in 25 years since I was a kid. None of our dogs ever had the monthly flea stuff on them (even now). However, my dogs are house dogs and go out when we go for our walks/hikes or to potty. They never just lay around outside in my yard.

Heartguard and Frontline I am told should prevent any flea and worm problems and that is what Smokey gets.

Mine get the once a month application and their heart worm . I take a stool sample in yearly . Haven't had worms since those came out. Agree... over the counter stuff doesn't work ... neither do flea collars.
