Inspired by the crate thread. Just wondering, How much time each day do your dogs spend outdoors and indoors each day? Are they locked indoors except for walks and when you take them out to pee and play or do they have free run of both backyard.

Ours are generally in inside most of the day, the door is usually wide open so they can take themselves out to toilet.

They sleep indoors so when we get up we lock them out to do whatever, and let the cat out for a couple of hours, they usually use this time for soem sunbathing till about 10/11 when they think its about time to come back in, by this time the door is usually open.

In the aftrenoon we usually go out to play a few times, but the sessions arn't so long now that its hotter, a lot more of the games take place indoors.

Also get out with Buster 45+ minutes a day for a good walk.
They are in the bakyard when we're gone as they help keep each other entertained.

Since we have no fenced yard i have to go out when Vic goes out. HE does get at the very least 2 walks a day. When we go out as long as it isn't freezing there is a 10 minute or so race around the 2 acres. Plus we go everywhere together, so he gets yard time at my mom's daily, and the run of the building at the guild twice a week. Twice a week we go to the park where he gets great run time, and once month we try for the off leash 55 acre park. IT isn't ideal, but it isn't that bad either.

Blaze can go out when ever he wants, some one is always within view of the door, he waits beside the door if he wants out. He can stay out aslon as he is quiet for aslong as he wants. But normally in a few mons he is barking mad, plus the back yard is like 15 feet by 15 feet not big at all, just enough room for him to run a tight circle.
We go to the dog park for about 3 hours a day. So I would so for a total of roughly 4 hours a day he is out side. 3+ hours completley and 5-10mins here and there.
We have a covered front porch (glass walls/windows) blaze loves to spend time sitting/laying in. He is not outdoors persay. But it is like he is, just in a glass shed, he can see all around. We just cant open the windows in it any more becuase of what happened with his tail last time.

Blaze prefers to be inside. If he is in the glass porch, the front door is open a crack so he can push the door open and come in. Normally he sits out there for hours if I am gone out, my mom says he waits for me there. I belive it becuase as soon as I am home he wont leave my side lol.

It really depends on the day and what kind of hours I am working or whether or not I am out of the house. But on average since they do sleep outdoors and are outside anytime I'm not home I would say they are outside 10-20 hours outside. However that doesnt mean they are *alone* for all those hours. Regardless of how hot or cold it is I will spend time just sitting outside with them while they romp around our fenced yard. Usually I have a book I read or I am on the phone with one of my dog friends. Of course at some point I end up joining in on playing. If it is a blizzard out or too cold for me to stand being out there just sitting for too long (go figure, their most favourite time to be outside) then I will sit right by the deck door so they can easily come and check in and see me without me actually being outside with them. Also our walks range from 1-3 hours or more and we aim to go on 1 or 2 of them every day.

it depends a lot on the weather.

my corgis are in a lot this time of year because of their allergies, and if it gets below 40 they start to get cold, and above 70 they will only stay out if they are in the shade, above 80, they want to be in.

my mals are out a lot, as long as i'm out with them. we don't have a fenced yard, so they are usually on flexis to run and play, or they just like to be out lazing in the grass. they don't care about cold, although i do draw the line when it gets below freezing, depending on ice and snow, i worry about the frostbite possibilities. if there's no ice and snow, they love being out and i'll bundle up and go out with them until it gets into the low 20's.

the mals are in a lot over the summer because they would never quit playing just because it's hot out. so i need to intervene and make them come in where it's cool.

Since the big dog daycare is outside (covered, but still outside) mine are outdoors around 30+ hours a week just during the day, not counting the walks and trips to the park we do when not at work. They're inside when I'm inside and out when I'm out. And I don't like sitting still or being indoors a whole lot.

Ollie has free will to go out too ... but prefers to be in . I do take him out the front door a few times a day so he can run the fence line of the neighbor's 2 poodles . I'm not fenced in front and luckily he stays in the yard . Very quiet one lane road .

It depends on the day and also the time of year. During the week, it's two walks a day (one AM, one PM) plus they usually are out for 30-40 minutes in the yard right when I get home from work, pottying and playing. I'm usually out there with them at this time. They are rarely outside unless one of us is out too.

On the weekends, unless we are super busy (which I try to keep to a minimum for the dogs' sake) they get outside a lot more, take a trip to the dog park, get longer walks, etc...

Neither one of them really expresses that much desire to go out a lot, especially when it's really hot or really cold (and definately not in the rain!). They can "ask" to go out any time they want, but they only do so when they have to potty. On warm sunny days Marlowe likes to go out and lay in the sun, and he's free to do that, but if I go back inside, it usually takes him about 10 minutes to decide that inside is where he'd like to be too.

Because Marlowe is a loudmouth and we live in a dense urban area, I try to keep his unaccompanied outside time to a minimum because with nothing better to do, he will start baying. Our yard backs on some pretty thick woods and there's lots of critters back there for him to obsess over and bay at.

It's really hard to come up with a measurement of time. How long they spend outside depends on the weather. Right now, it's getting chilly for my short haired dogs so they get let out in the morning and sometimes they'll just go potty and come right back in. In and out whenever....Right now, I just let the two big dogs and Jose` out and they're doing something....running around in the yard I think...maybe checking out what's going on in the pasture. I expect they'll be back at the door within 15 minutes.

In warm weather, they hang out outside a good deal of the day unless it's exceedingly hot, then inside in the a.c. house. They like to lounge around on the deck or on the lawn a lot with little bursts of speed up into the woodsy part of my property and then right away back in the yard.

We usually take a hike or long walk pretty close to every day for about an hour or so. Mostly, they rip roar around here, chasing squirrels and wrestling.

They come in and out as they wish.

"Yelp!" There's Lyric at the door now. Gotta go do my door man duty. LOL.

Mine stay inside most the time. The two papillons are small enough to fit through the fence. And Beau WILL go through the fence to go after deer and rabbits in the woods on our property. Plus we have coyotes.

But they're outside a few hours a day. When we take them out to go potty, we usually spend some time outside playing. Nikki doesn't appreciate. She goes back to the door and sits and waits to go back inside. They also stay outside if we're out grilling, doing yard work, or swimming which we do a lot. Plus we go on walks and we go to the park some.

Inside unless they are going potty or Lilly is walking the Greenway. I used to tie them when the weather was nice and us people wanted to stay in, but too many agressive dogs now.

Xerxes gets a 20-40 minute walk in the morning, 1-2hours every evening plus a few potty breaks here and there. Our walks aren't just "heel" or loose lead walks- we practice obedience, down stays, remote downs, hand signals, he is allowed to sniff, chase, pounce, get in the water, track and whatever else he wants to do.

Fortunately I don't have a fenced in yard so I get to experience all these things with him. To me the most amazing thing that happens on these walks is when I "shhhh" him and freeze-and he immediately looks where I'm looking, thinking that I've spotted something BIG for him to chase. After that the next amazing thing is the patented "triple pounce."

On the weekends, however, he gets much more outside time than that-usually a nice 3 hour hike in the midday in a park somewhere.

He also goes to the feed store, petsmart and we will take walks to our towncenter every other Sunday.

I don't think he suffers being inside during the daytime. He seems to get plenty of rest-and he really has to work to eat his frozen breakfast out of that Kong.:)

It depends on the weather. When it is nice out, we spend most of our days outside with breaks inside. I love sitting outside and playing with them. So in the warmer months, we spend almost all day outside. When it gets colder, we spend it inside with short times outside playing.

Sadie stays inside while we are at work. She has run of the house. My husband comes home for lunch everyday so she gets out for about a 1/2 hour at lunch. But when we get home from work she usually is outside with my husband until dark. But she comes and goes. She'll go out with him for a while, then she'll come inside and climb up on the couch beside me and lay her head in my lap, then she'll jump up and be ready to go back out. There's no set time though. If we're not home she's inside, if we're home she can go out whenever she wants to.

We don't have a fenced yard, so he gets to go out for his 3 walks plus trips to the doggie park and wherever else I can take him. I would let him sit out on our deck if he wanted to, but he likes to be wherever we are.

I don't have a fenced in yard, so Meg is out whenever I am, and in if I am in. We are generally outside for about 8 - 9 hours a day; never less than 7.

Ours our mostly inside but they used to be mostly outside. We started worrying about people maybe stealing/killing them so they stay in alot. They go out many times to potty and we play fetch until they are tired (older dogs tire quickly unfortunately). Back inside and everyone rests and wanders around or snuggles.
They like it. No accidents inside. No obsessive, boredom tactics 90% of the time.

My dogs always live inside. Bailey (I only have one right now) mostly wants to be with me since Cody died. He is always outside when I'm working in the garden. If I am inside, he will give one bark when he wants in or he will come and sit outside my computer room and stare at me until I get up; then he'll meet me at the back door. We go for walks twice a day. He sleeps in our bedroom. So I would say Bailey is in the house 95% of the day and night.

Since Milo would get into trouble if he was alone, he's usually only out with someone, but i spend a fair deal of time outside, in summer at least.

In the summer my 2 spend most of their time inside in the Air conditioner. Bear being a Lab/newfie mix has the coat of a newf. So he can't really handle the heat too long. They go out for potty breaks a few times a day and in the evenings when it's cooler Bear and I go for a walk down the dirt road. In the fall and winter, Bear spends alot of time outside. He loves to cooler weather! I only let him out as long as I am out there as well to watch them. I don't have a fenced yard since i have more than 3 acres. So I have to watch them and others who drive down the road or walk down the road. Bear has a tie out outside otherwise he'll run off. He's always been a runner and I've worked with him but he just loves chasing things. Dixie will stay in the yard but she is still always supervised. Ya never know what could happen.
