she gains weight easy. she weighs 21 lbs. other people that have 13" shelties weigh 15- 17 lbs. she could probably loose a couple lbs. we havent been getting as much exercise because i hurt my back. and now winter is around the corner. i cant mix any veggies with her food she gets loose stools, have tried that . i just started giving her 1/3 cup twice a day, she acts like shes starving. when we where on fromms i gave her 3/8 cup a day.

I would suggest looking at the bag and feeding according to the weight that she should be at. Does your sheltie play any games that you two could play without hurting your back anymore?

Wow - I give my 17.5", 36 lb dog (very active) 1/3 cup twice a day when she is on kibble. That's just enough to maintain her weight, while allowing me to give some treats during training.

Bags always overestimate how much you should give; the company wants you to feed more! If you are feeding 1/3 cup twice a day, and your dog is still heavier than you like, drop her down a bit. Maybe keep her at 1/3 for the morning, and drop her to 1/4 at night (when she will be sleeping anyway).

Add some green beans to her food (frozen not canned, the canned has too much salt). This will help her to feel full, while keeping her calorie count low. I feed my dogs WAY less on TWO than other foods. I have a 37lb dog and she gets about 3/4-1 cup, but she has a very high energy level.

My 45lb dog gets only 3/4 cup per day as well, and my 30 lb dog gets about 1/2 cup. Just keep a close eye on her weight, if she has a back problem you want her to be as skinny as possible, but still at a healthy weight. My friend had a 14 inch sheltie and she is only 12-14 lbs.

Edited to say: Oops, I misread that, YOU have the back problem not the dog. Have you tried canned pumpkin as a filler? It is suppossed to have a binding effect so as to keep the stools firm. Make sure you get the canned pure pumpkin, not the pie filling. Also, it may take a few days for her tummy to get used to it, so don't get discouraged if she's having loose stools for a few days.

I wouldn't expect a reply from them anytime soon. I have emailed them 3 times and have never gotten a reply back yet. They have horrible customer service.

Yup, 21 is a bit too much for a 13" sheltie... 16-18 is probably where she needs to be.
Don't get discouraged... even just a few pounds is a lot for a sheltie to lose! It'll take a while. You won't see any changes for probably about a month.

Auggie is 13.5 and weighs 18 right now... he could probably still lose a pound or so. We feed Canidae, but he only eats 1/2 cup total per day (1/4 per meal.) 1/3 cup a meal is probably too much for your little girl, especially since she needs to lose weight!
