i know this varies a lot, by breed and individual dog, so how mushy does your dog get?
Both my mom's wheaten Benji and my Eskie Cody would like to be close, but not overly so. Both would lay their head on your knee or lie on your feet when you were watching tv, but they weren't "lap dogs". Cody also liked to be hugged, if you wrapped your arms around you he'd put his head on your shoulder. Benji, if you pick him up and put him on your lap, he'll stay for a while, but he won't do it by himself.
Milo will lie down five feet away, and slowly inch his way closer until his butt's smushed up against you, and then kind of roll over until he's in your lap. He pretty much wants to be touching someone whenever possible.
what about your dogs?
