HY is in third grade. She was grounded anyway and couldn't go to the school skating party, if she had, i doubt she would have been able to finish at all. AS it is we worked on it for over an hour and a half, social studies, still had the spelling test to study for as well. SHe missed three days because she was sick and it took us every night for a week straight coming home from school until bedtime to finish. Now we got another big whomping project. SIghs, i forgot how much homework 3 graders have, but this seems excessive.

She has a 20 minute piano lesson each day after school, i hate to see that crowded out as well, but a child needs sometime to undwind between school and bed. I hope this lightens up a bit before the holidays. Maybe they are trying to crowd it in so they can, i don't know.

I don't remember having nearly any in elementary school.

Granted, that could just be due to the fact that I'm so overwhelmed with it now :(

Plenty of time for that in life isn't it? I told my son last night..."i told you to enjoy your freedom while you were little" and i did too. All he does is work now. Did get voted employee of the month which considering the size of the place is quiet an honor and will look good for the future.
I have been out of the loop so this is all kind of emersion shock. Saturday cartoon commericals have target messages like "eat little" GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY, no one had to tell us, nor my children either. SAd.

That seems like a lot.
I have a neighbor who's in 3rd grade and he never has much homework.
I don't really remember my homework amounts when I was in elementary school, but I can tell you that I never even had that much in high school.

Lily is in 2nd grade and she has about 20-30mins (usually closer to 20) work of HW each night aside from Friday. Usually either spelling or math.

Next time she is sick like that, just cal up the school,. and ask them to get her work ready for you to pick up for the next couple of days. That way she wont be totally behind, and maybe she can do a little bit while at home.

I don't remember having homework until I got to high school at which time they cranked it to overload. In addition they never gave us any in-class time to do our homework so you had to do it at home. All the homework I had in middle school or elementary was finished in class while the teacher was teaching it. Whenever I got to a problem I didn't know I'd just wait until the teacher caught up with me.

Then I got to college and I'm back to no homework (just reading and studying when test time comes around).

How much homework does she have? Like how many assignments, pages, length, problems, etc? Didn't really specify in your first post.

SHe was too sick when she was out to be doing anything but being miserable. I am not adding homework on top of it. But it is a good idea. As soon as the fever was gone she went back tho the cough persisted for a week. IT isn't my ideal way of doing things but they don't dare miss a day more then necessary.

Honestly, I think homework is stupid and pointless. All it does is frustrate kids. I never did mine because I didn't understand half of it because my teachers were too busy to explain anything properly, and then they'd get mad at me for not doing it, give me detention, and I'd get even MORE frustrated and stressed out.
Third grade is too young for homework. What is she, like nine? Developing social skills and interacting with other kids is more important, I think. I don't understand why teachers can't just assign classwork and leave it there. *sigh*
Maybe I'm biased, but if ever I do become a teacher (which has always been my fall back if grooming doesn't work out for me forever) I won't assign homework. I KNOW I wasn't the only kid not doing it and getting p*ssed off because I got detention for it.

eight!:(

WE do it. Instead of being able to enjoy a story of our choice together, or watch Are you smarter then a fith grader or the dance show we like. THere is a real important reason for some down time in a day. I don't feel like she is getting enough and i don't want her to burn out because she actually loves school. ENjoys learning.

HEr geography was 4 pages of deffinations looked up copied down, illustrated (a small square to be drawn in and possibly colored) then used for the test. IT was a big major test. REal sensible putting it on the monthly school skating party wasn't it? sheeesh
WE have a book review to do a month where they have a list of 9 different activites they can use to review their book for the class. Diaroma, poster, travel brochure, cartoon strip, dress up in favorite characater and relieve one key part of the book, make puppets and present a short show, create a map..

Book must be preapproved.

Thank GOd i am not working two jobs like i was when i was raising my children for there would be no way to get all this done. One hour play, supper prep and eat, chore (usually putting their clean clothes away or picking up, and story. Bed...scouts..piano lessons...thats on my time and i can't help resenting that we have to back off on what i consider important.

I don't mind doing this to a point, but you add projects like that geography on top of it and the daily math drill, That's it. All evening practically every day.

HEr challange word was neighborhood

ANd best yet those deffinitions they wrote down where what they got to look at to copy down. So for the kids that didn't get it done they were screwed.

I really never spent any time at home on homework. Occasionally, I'd have a project that might take me an hour or two, but I did most things pretty quickly during free time at school or on the bus or something.

My little sister is eight as well. She usually has a sheet of math problems (front and back), has to do something with her spelling words (5 times each, sentences, etc.), she's supposed to read every night (though my mom just usually signs the paper without her reading), and a few times she has had to do DOL (daily oral language).

Matt is in third grade as well. Normally he has a math sheet, a reading/Language Arts sheet, and one page out of a "Spelling packet" (packet with 5 sheets in it, one to do each evening.

Along with some reading.

Shhhessshh, she sounds like she's doing MY homework... and Im in 12th grade. When I was in 3rd grade we just had to do a sheet of math, spelling and the nightly reading, which I did willingly. Then again, in 3rd grade I always cheated on my spelling test, which to this day bits me in the ars. Took me until 8th grade to learn how to spell beautiful... sad, but true. Now I tend to start my easy homework on the train ride home (cheeper than driving.) and do the harder stuff at home. I usually work about 2 hours at home. =/

Nash is in 2nd grade and has about 20 to 30 minutes each night . But being slower , it takes him longer . I would be interesting to know how much the Japanese and Chinese kids have , as they are so much ahead of our kids .

The rule of thumb at our school is no more than 10 minutes/grade. So in grade 3, they should have no more than 30 minutes a night.
