10%? 15%?

I usually tip $2 for a $12 service. I will be getting the dog a shampoo and hair cut that will cost $39. Would you tip $4, 5$, other?

I hate tipping. I tip of course. Usually around 15% depending on the service and what we asked them to do. Steve loves to tip heavily. He wants people to remember him when he comes back. Sometimes, if we have really crappy service he'll tip a LOT and then we'll go back and have the most wonderful service lol. But I don't get the whole tipping thing. Why tip your pizza delivery guy but not someone who brings you flowers? Do you tip the bag boy that bags your groceries but not the cashier? Hair stylist but what about the dog groomer? There are a lot of people that work HARD in low income jobs that don't get tipped. I liked how it was in Japan. Nobody tips ever because they take pride in their work. And that's a place where waitresses could use tips. A typical waitress can't afford to move out of her parents house even after working full time for a year. Sad.

I didn't even know you were supposed to tip dog groomers????????
I didn't think you were supposed to either. :yikes:

When we eat out I tip 20% if the service was above average. Which in my experience is about 90% of the time. 15% if it was just average and 0-10% if the server was rude.

Tipping a dog groomer never even crossed my mind. I couldn't even drive into my groomer's parking lot for $39.

At first I didn't tip my groomer because I didn't know. Then several times I saw people tipping them. So then I felt HORRIBLE because the first time she did one of my dogs, she saved my golden. He was covered in spurs (from where I boarded him - never went back there again). So I try to tip her about $10 a dog. I have 2 Germans and 1 Golden. Plus since my dogs love her (she's so amazing with them) I want her to know how much I value what she does for me and them.

I've been with her for a long time now. They think of their service just like a waitress. If you value it and like the job they've done, then you'll tip them accordingly. Just my .02

I always tip my groomer. From working at facilities that have groomers I am shocked at the small number of people who tip. Do you also not tip your hairdresser? It's the same deal.

I usually tip between 5 and 10. Oh, and for piercings (my own, not for the dogs, lol) I tip $5 - $10 per piercing and for tattoos I have a base tip of $25, but have been known to do up to $50 per sitting.

I appreciate these people's work and I always add in the tip when I am saving up to get something done. Tipping is important, and whether it's PC or not, it can definitely sway their opinions in your favor, thus getting you into hard-to-get slots and appointments on short notice.

Dude, you have a Collie! One just left last week with a bill of $110 from the groomer. Granted it was in horrific condition, but a full groom on a Collie still takes forever. $39 is nothing! $40 is the base-price around here for a Lab bath!

Yes, I swear to you, I am fully aware I have a Collie. I mentioned the $39 because it was a price the OP mentioned and I was joking that it wouldn't even get me into the parking lot. I am very aware of what it costs to groom a Collie, even if that Collie isn't in horrific shape or doesn't have a single teeny tiny little mat on her. That's why I don't tip.

Good thread, but a week late. I took Darby to the groomer for the first time last week and as I was standing there wating for her to come out I realized that I didn't know the tipping ettiquete for a groomer. I ended up tipping $5 for a $25 grooming charge. But they had here there 6 hours while they calmed her down enough to work with her. I'm not sure $5 was enough there.

But as a general rule 20% seem pretty fair to me.

I always tip. 20% as a rule, but if service is poor- I tip accordingly. I go by the rule if I don't have enough money to tip but only enough for the service, then I don't have enough money.

Well, Pepe usually costs around $60 for the works, and Flicka usually around $70. I don't tip.

I wonder how much it would cost to get mav done? He'd HATE it.
At the place I go, he'd probably be about $90 - maybe more, depending on how well he tolerated it (they charge a handling fee), and the condition of his coat...

I didn't realize you have to tip, either. I know why you absolutely should tip your hairdresser, but I figured groomers work the prices of things like scissors and sharpening into their fees - and it's not like they pay to rent a chair...
Learn something new every day I guess!

The general rule for tipping in the US is "anybody who carries something for you." Like the bellboy at a hotel ($1 per bag) and the taxi driver, who is carrying... well... you. Too many trips to big cities have taught me a lot about tipping. =P
I despise tipping at restaurants - I always tip REALLY well because I know they make no money, but it pisses me off that restaurants just don't pay their freaking employees a decent wage in the first place. *shakes fist*

The grooming places I've been to, the groomers either work for hourly pay (usually around $6.50/hr which is very low - fast food even makes more) or if they get enough hours they commission out - 30 - 40%. Also the places I go, they have to have their own tools, etc. just like a hair dresser. The shops don't provide them with anything except maybe shampoo. So it can get very expensive. If they're a good groomer they'll make sure their tools are sharp, etc. That all really adds up.

The only reason I know some of the things is because I've thought about getting into grooming. Even if I did it part-time it would be very expensive to start up at a shop anywhere for little pay. Now I'm scared even more hearing that most people don't tip (I didn't tip at 1st either because I didn't know).

I'll tell you though, since I've started tipping (and I tip my groomer any where from 16 - 33%, usually 33% - $30 per dog and I try to tip $10, but have done as low as $5 when I've been short) I've noticed a difference in my service. I have an easier time getting fit in for those hard to get appointments, they use better products on them (without the extra charge), she will take the extra time if needed to calm them down (my oldest doesn't like the dryers so she hand drys her, my youngest is scared of strangers and she makes sure she's not exposed to anyone except her), she gives me discounted pricing and usually does little extras to them.
