How long can pups who are being toilet trained hold it in for? I know they can't hold it for long, but when I start crate training a pup when I get one, will I have enough time to lead her outside and go to toilie?

Thanks. :D

It's supposed to be they can hold it one hour longer than they're age - or was it two hours? - so a two-month-old puppy would be able to hold it for three hours.

I'm new to this so don't quote me or anything but I think the rule is they can hold it an hour for each month old they are plus 1. So 2 months=3 hours, 3 months= 4 hours, etc.

All pups should go out to the bathroom within fifteen minutes after eating, playing, drinking or napping. The rule of how long they can hold their urine is one hour for every month of life up to 12 months, and no longer. If you are going to crate your pup make sure he has gone potty before you leave for an extended period of time.

So if I release an 8 week old Pup from it's crate every half hour to an hour and say "toilie" to it and wait for it to poop, everything should be ok and it will learn? That's what it says in the books anyway. :)

Another thing, dogs that are crated will see the potty time as a reward time, after they do their job, let them have a little free play time before you take them back into the house. If you take them in too soon they will equate potty with punishment (as in sessation of play being punishment) so be careful to let them have a few minutes of party time after the potty.

My puppy must have a big bladder. She goes 8 hours now. I thought she might mess in her crate when we first had to leave her all day, but she's a good girl and she holds it.

Wow, can they really hold it 12 hours at 12 months? That seems way too long. I sure can't hold it 12 hours! :p

Roxy used to have to go out every 10 minutes-literally. Now, she can hold it for as long as she needs to. But, we never make her hold it longer than 3 hours. If she really has to go, she just goes to the door and pins her ears back as if she is waiting to hear us coming towards her to let her out. LOL
Precious cries when she has to go and Spud barks... and barks and barks and barks. LOL
