So my Cousins have decided to get a Maltese puppy just randomly. I have not met the puppy yet, but they are pretty much clueless when it comes to dogs. And my Cousins girlfriend is very opinionated even when she is wrong.

My SIL who has seen the puppy and has talked to them said they are clueless when it comes to the puppy. They had no idea it needed more booster shoots ect ect.

And their method of training is "hit the dog and it will learn its lesson"

And the kicker is they want to stud out their puppy to make money and so they can pay for schooling.

I guess the puppy is 10 weeks old and only 2 pounds. So he is going to be just a little guy. I might go see him tonight and hopefully help them out a little. I will be also bringing puppy books with me. And maybe Teagan, but she is so worried that her puppy is going to be injured and attacked So maybe no Teagan. :p

Pretty sure the puppys going to end up with self esteem issues lol.

So how do you keep calm when people are so stupid and clueless when they are your family.

I know exactly what you mean we started babysitting Otis when his owner was out of town and i wanted to get a little information on how he is treated so i know what he is used to. He said well i usually just leave him in his crate all day let him maybe a hour out of the whole day:yikes: And if he misbehaves then just give him a good kick across the floor:madgo: it was all i could was to not go off on him.

In addition to the puppy books tell them to watch "It's me or the dog" religiously. They will hopefully see that "hit the dog and it will learn its lesson" is not the correct way to train a dog or puppy. Give them facts and figures on the overpopulation of pets, take them to a shelter and let them see all the dogs. Make sure that someone from the shelter talks to them about how the dogs are euthanized when their is no room at the shelter.

If that was someone from my family that is exactly what I would do. Fortunately for me and them they already know about adoption, pet over population, spaying and neutering.

I will be meeting the puppy tonigh so we will see how it goes. I think they might take in the advice I have for them hopefully because they were taking in my SIL advice, but she also told them to talk to me because I know more than her.

So I am hoping they will ask questions and advice. Cross fingers.

My sister just got a yorkie puppy. She's clueless but at least she means well. The hard part for me is that her kids are just as clueless and clumsy. Yorkies are awefully small for that kind of roughhousing.

Yikes... good luck... I know what you mean... I have people in my family that are extremely clueless when it comes to dogs. I can't tell you how many times I shudder when one of my family members goes off on how amazing Cesar Millan is... It's everything I can do not to completely go off on them.

I vent wildly to my mom, then if they have questions I will answer.

You never really get use to it, though.

I bite my tongue unless the situation is abusive or my advice is asked for then rant to my friend Ed.

It wasn't too long ago that I was 'clueless'. Thanks to knowledgeable people, like on this forum, puppy and tricks classes, and other owners of great dogs to socialize with each other. I have managed to keep myself above 'clueless' for quite a few months now. :D

It's hard to keep my mouth shut, but I do now, unless the situation is abusive.
No one takes me seriously because of my age, anyway.
If someone seems open to it, though, I try to give advice in a seemingly casual way. It usually makes people more receptive.

Honestly the hardest part with me for family was saying NO! when I had puppies in the house. I just tell family now I don't sell to family. It got ugly with the last litter but I would be damned if I would see one of my own pups neglected.
