How did your dogs get their name(s)? Were they named something previously? Did you have a different name in mind?

Are you still happy with their name and do you still think it fits them?

Roxie came as a Roxie, although I had a giant list of names and hers was absolutely not one of them lol.

I do like Roxie a lot, for my dog anyways. It's really the only name that fits her. However, if she had been a darker color, I'd have switched her name to Shadow or Phantom because of her personality.

The only dog I've named was Milo.

I chose the name because it was my second favorite name, and I wanted to save my first favorite name for a human child. I think it fits him, but kind of wish I picked something more creative. I don't mind it though. I also would have reconsidered if I thought about 1) having kids while he was still around or 2) if it's weird giving my kid the same name as a dog, especially one so prominent in my life and family. But so far, I have no boys, and I like other names for human boys anyway.

He didn't have a name beforehand.

I have a long list of names, and would probably change the name of a future dog that came to me, unless they were a senior who had a nice family and it was already a big scary adjustment.

I gave Fable her name for a few reasons. A fable is a short story to teach a moral lesson, and since Fable came with a story that a lot of people can learn from, I thought it was a fitting name for her. Also, all of her puppies were named after characters in Greek mythology, so it stayed with the story theme of the litter.

She was previously Annabelle, and sometimes I wish I had kept that name. I think it really suits her, but I also wanted to name her something unusual. Everyone I meet always tells me how much they love her name and that they've never met a dog named Fable before. But since it isn't a common name, it always goes something like this when I'm introducing her: "Her name is Fable. No, not Mable. Not Sable, either. It's Fable."

Leo came as Leo. Not really a name I would choose on my own, but I am completely happy with it. It just fits him perfectly, and I can't imagine him with any other name.
Originally, I was playing with names such as Jude and Zone. I still like those names, and might likely use them for a future dog.

In general, I like names that are one or two syllables. In general, I go away from common human names, but don't mind unusual ones. I especially like names with quick and easy nicknames, such as just "Z" for Zone.

My next dog is going to be female, and right now the two names I like the most are Sky and Ziva.

Cynder was originally Ginger. She's black and Michael hated the name anyway, so Cynder she became. It totallly fits her

Abrams was Abrams before I knew he was born. He's named after the tank, the M1A1 Abrams. They're big, they're powerful, they're one of the best tanks of its time, and if one starts coming for you there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. Seemed fitting for a Chessie. Abrams is SO and Abrams. His name fits him perfectly.

Histamine was always Histamine. And her name is absolutely perfect for her. Every other name we thought of just...wasn't her.

Theodore is now Leopold Butters. It took me a few days to get used to calling him hy his new name, but I have *always* wanted an orange cat named Butters so I was determined to change his name. I think either name suits him well, which is why it has been hard to change it from Theodore.

Meg was originally Spice when she came up on the transport. It may have been her actual name, since she was an owner surrender, but she didn't seem to know it. I changed it to Nutmeg pretty quickly, and just called her Meg. I had no intentions of keeping her at first, and didn't want to waste a good name on a foster dog. Of course I love the name now, although if I'd known she was staying, I might have gone with something more girly, but I'm perfectly happy with Meg.

Gusto was "Puppy-uppy" for quite a while after I got him. Naming him took forever. He would have been Spencer if my mother wasn't horribly opposed to it. She desperately wanted him to be Eli (And she thinks that's what I'm naming the next dog, because she wants me to. Sorry Mom, names are already picked out). Someone in my agility club said something about him needing "a fun name like Gusto", and I loved it for him. My mother calls him Gus, because she likes that better. I call him To (pronounced Toe) in revenge to remind the world that he is Gusto, not Gus. I still love the name, and can't imagine him as anything else.

Auggie had no name but breeder's husband thought he should be "Streak" or "Flash" both of which are funny since his registered name ended up being The Flash. I really wanted a dog named Harley to start, but he was so obviously an Auggie. =P We picked Auggie that night and the next day told the breeder yes, that's the one I want, and we think we want to name him Auggie, so she started calling him that. So he never really had any other name.
Auggie actually ended up on the name list by accident - we were watching an Illini basketball game. Our favorite player at the time was James Augustine who was "Augie" for short, and about two weeks before going to look at the puppies one of the announcers called him that during the game and I was like GASP THAT WOULD BE A CUTE PUPPY NAME. Why I spelled it with two G's I'm not really sure, I just think it looks better that way.
Also funny is the other popular player at the time was Dee Brown, and the breeder was calling Auggie's brother was "Little Dee" (Dee Brown is short for a basketball player and Little Dee was the smallest puppy.) It was like it was just meant to be.

Payton was "Willy" at his breeder, and I went to pick him up thinking I would name him "Cowboy." Cowboy definitely didn't fit. None of my names on my massive name list fit except Payton. I almost didn't name him Payton because everybody thought I was saying Peyton as in Peyton Manning, even flipping Illinois people didn't think Payton as in Walter Payton. But no other name fit. Payton was right. And I am glad I named him Payton.

I intend to name the next dog Kane to continue my sports theme and it will be really hard to convince me to name the dog anything else. I will probably skeptically look at the dog before I agree to take him going DO YOU LOOK LIKE A KANER BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T THIS IS NEVER GOING TO WORK.

Rudy was named Rudy because my mom thought he looked like a deer.. he still does so he was named Rudy after Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. We call him Rudy Roo, though.

Dixie was originally Fritza before we adopted her. My boss at the shelter named her that.. but I thought it was an ugly name and thankfully she only had it for a few days. I think it was the name of an elf? I don't know but she definitely was not going to keep that name.

My parents & I decided on Dixie and it does fit her. I know it's a common dog name but I really like it for her. She was almost Clairece because we have Rudy, but it's too much of a name for us even though pretty lol. Dixie is just as a pretty name. :)

Pip was named Freckles at his foster. I said, nope. We tried to brainstorm black and white things but a lot of them I think are overdone (Oreo, etc). I wanted to name him Flower but my husband vetoed it. Eventually we settled on Pip as a geeky way to name your dog Spot.

Maisy was Roxie at her foster. Her immediate predecessor was named Roxy so that was also a big bag of nope. I wanted a girly name and just read through baby name lists until I found one I liked.

Squash came named. There really was no possibility of changing it. :p

Toast... I've said half jokingly for some time that I'm going to have two dogs named Fig and Toast someday. When the inkling of a possibility of maybe bringing him home was born, I thought "Well, maybe this is my Toast." And it turned out that he was. :)

Hudson's litter name was "Thor". I wanted to name him something that would always be NY, my mom gave me some (horrible) suggestions, then driving to work one day I knew. Hudson. Like the explorer, and the river, and the valley. The place that was currently (but hopefully not long term) my home. So Hudson he is.

Next dog I want to name Berkshire after the mountains.

Dance: Dance was originally "Snuggle" with her breeder. No thanks. Plus, she's the most independent and selfish dog I've ever known and hates snuggling, so it didn't even suit her a little bit. Originally I'd planned to call my Toller Aero. I don't know why, but that's the name I'd always imagined. Then I got Dance and it didn't suit her at all. I knew someone through the Dobes' breeder with a dog named Danse and thought at first that it was strange, and then grew to like it, and eventually loved it. I asked if I could use it for my puppy and they said go ahead, and Dance she became. It's one of my most favourite names and I still love it, eight years later.

Ripley: My mom named him. I wanted to name him something nerdy yet distinguished, like Nigel haha. I still wish I'd gotten to name him that. I think it would suit him way more. He's totally a Nigel. He's a dog who could pull off a lot of different human male names actually. I also loved the name Gauge. I still don't love Ripley as a name, but it works.

Journey: Journ was "Nina" with her breeder. That definitely was not staying. I was embarrassed introducing her to people as that lol. Plus, it's the name of a relative. I wanted something that reflected not only the fact that I faced major anxiety and stress over flying and staying with 'strangers' to get her, but also something that reflected my journey with dogs and how I ended up with her. I like the name and it really does suit her, but I wouldn't have named her Journey if I knew just how popular it was among the dog sport world. I had no idea, and now I regret my choice a little. I don't mind semi popular names, but I dislike super popular names for my own dogs. That's why I won't name my next puppy River, eventhough I love it lol. It's just too popular. I also didn't realize just how many people would think I named Journey her after the band haha. Oh well. She mainly goes by Beans anyway. Or Beanie. Or, most embarrassing of all, Beanie Weenies haha.

Gambit: Named Jonathan by the rescue, and originally Token by me. I loved that name, but after a few weeks it just didn't fit him. Gambit did, though, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Gimmick: His first owner called him Oreo. Gag. really thought I was going to get his registration papers, and I wanted his registered name to be "Something Whippet This Way Comes", so I was looking for magic themed names. My father suggested Gimmick, and there you go.

Glitch. First owners named him Bella. Um no, because penis. I did not intend to keep him, so I stuck him with Glitch, as in 'that creature that Glitched up my plans'. It fits him, though he gets called Roozle just as often, and that fits him as well.

Kiba I named after an anime character, Stryder is from LOTR. Neither had litter names.

Lincoln was named Red, he was Puppy Puppy for awhile until I thought of Lincoln (he's the color of a penny).

Charlie was named Peggy from the rescue that named/pulled/saved her. Then my sister had named her Dixie, but once she was rehomed to me Charlie she became.

Nimbus was surrendered as Mandy. Then she was Mushu, Porkchop, Martie McFly was almost her name until she was Nimbus.

I am generally horrible at deciding on names. I'm not surprised all my animals will respond to just about anything.

Sam was named Cooper but his foster home was calling him Samson and he responded to it so I kept it. He usually gets called Sam or Seemy. I'm horrible at names but I think I would've liked to name him Shady if it suited him better.

Wilson was Rover at his breeder's but I hated that name. I had a huge list of names picked out for him and I have no idea what happened to that. He was Camo at first but it really doesn't suit him and everyone thought his name was Camel. The other contender was Ruka (short for Rukatunturi which is a mountain in Finland) and I kind of wish I would've named him that but again it doesn't really suit him. Ended up going with Wilson because it suits him better than any other name I had picked out.

Probably not LOL, James Augustine played in 2004 so it's recentish, and I don't think I (nor Auggie) am that old!
A lot of people had Augie's when they were kids, after Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy!

That is usually where people think the name came from. Illinois people are always delighted when I explain it, like "oh!! I LOVED HIM. AND DEE BROWN. YEAH." hahaha.

I still LOVE the name Cowboy, it's definitely still on the list, it just didn't suit Payton when I went and picked him up! I remember sitting in the car with him in my lap looking down at him and thinking "yeah... no." LOL

....2004 was 11 years ago :p

I was going to say "was '04 his rookie year because I think they got their Augie around 2002 and that was shortly before he started playing conpetetively", but he texted me and said she wasn't named after him.
