Well winter finally arrived yesterday with our first snowstorm. It was mostly freezing rain and hail but a bit of snow cam last night as well. We only have about 4 inchs on the ground but it's around -15 ( thats celcius I have no idea how to do the conversion) with the windchill. Duke has the Rotti coat even though he has german shepherd and collie in him. I'm unsure if he can handle these temperatures without a coat and boots or should I go get him some. He's used to a minimum of 2 hours outside a day on walks so I can't just not walk him for the next few months however I'm unsure if he needs a coat and boots?

Thanks
Kayla

Brrrrrrrrrr that's about 5 degrees F. I just got back from Toronto and day-um it gets cold there! I'm not an expert, but I don't think I'd keep your pup out for more than 20 minutes at a time at that temp.

Thanks alot, ya it is pretty chilly. I let Duke wear my sweater for his morning walk and am going out again to the store to get him a nice warm coat and some boots. Have had to call the Spca twice today about two dogs outside in the backyard without water or shelter.

My dogs are fine to about -25 C or even -30 but they pretty much run the whole time. Dogs stay remarkably warm when they keep moving. Of course a dog from California or Florida is going to be have trouble if it got shipped to Canada mid winter but for dogs that live here year round and are somewhat acclimatised, they do fine.
When my dogs start picking up a paw , it's usually just to pull out a snow ball that has gotten big enough to push their pads apart, it's not the temperature.
We had -30 weather with windchill into the -40s a couple weeks ago and THAT was too cold on their paws esp without boots.

I'd defiantely get him a sweater and some boots because his feet will get frozen cold and burn. I wouldn't keep him out for that long even with a sweater and boots however because he will still feel the cold and it isn't good for him.

Kayla- good for you for calling the SPCA on the people who are abusing their dogs! I think there is a special place in HELL for such people!

Well, I think the best you can do in this situation is to buy your dog a proper fitting sweater from say Petsmart and some type of shelter from high winds. If you have the money, a nice warm bed can also ensure that your dog is comfortable at all times.

I actually found my boxers jacket today which I wasnt sure if it would fit him or not. It did but black dosen't look nice on him so I'll prolly go get him a red coat instead and try and find pure black boots as I hate the blue and silver variety.

I also have a cute pic of Duke wearing my Slipknot sweater on monday before I realised I still had Diamonds jacket ( she passed away in Oct).

He's got a nice warm bed inside here as well so no worries about him being chilly inside:).

Talk about irresponsible owners in winter I had to call OSPCA one more time to day for a dog left outside and for a big black dog running around loose near a major road ( my mom was in a rush and wouldn't stop the car for me to get out and try to lure him ove:().
