I got British as Stephen Fry with a corgi.

I'll admit to being a bit of an Anglophile. Does it count that I speak some Welsh? And own a Welsh dog? lol I also go through tea like it's my job and read Dickens. Can I move to the UK now?

That's really cool! I took it in college so I was sort of decent at it (like I could write a silly short story that mostly made grammatical sense) but I don't remember much beyond "shwmae" and a few words and phrases. I still have the textbook and CDs and I say I'll pick it up again, but I haven't gotten around to it. If I ever get a chance to visit Wales I'll have to brush up my skills.

Yeah, my address is very welsh! I have to spell it every time I give it out.

ALL words are ridiculous to pronounce. It took me a year to even be able to properly pronounce my boyfriends name as welsh sounding.

Torches dog is called Rhys, and I can assure you, that is NOT pronounced 'Reese'. That always makes me smile :)

This is the longest village name in Wales:

llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

:yikes:

Try that one ;)

I think we had to pronounce that as part of Welsh class in college. I'm pretty sure we all failed at it. The pronunciation is the hardest part! I think you really have to listen to someone saying it a bunch of times.

How do you pronounce Rhys? I know most people, even in England, tend to pronounce it "Reece", but y in Welsh is more of a "u" sound, like in Cymru. I'm thinking "Roos" or "Rus" or something like that? And I think "rh" is kind of rolled or something?

Owning a Welsh breed, there are a fair number of kennels with Welsh names, or individual dogs with Welsh names, but most are pronounced in English. When Watson's breeder found out I knew some Welsh she said "Oh great! Now you can tell us all how they're supposed to be pronounced!" :rofl1: "Briallu" is one near me that they pronounce the way you would in English - Bree-ah-loo

I really wanted a Welsh name for Watson, but couldn't come up with one I really liked other than Owen, and I couldn't use that because my husband's cousin *just* had a baby named Owen and I thought it would be weird. Most names were either too hard to pronounce, or just Welsh spellings of English names that were super common (like David/Dafydd). I do like some of the Welsh girl names though.

Well, rh is a 'letter' of its own and is almost impossible to spell out lol... It's breathy, and not a proper rolled R. Put your tongue in a frozen R position and breath with a bit of r noise....

Ok, I've asked the other half and we have established it's like saying CREASE, but ditch the Ch noise! And the rest of the word... Rh...

And Y us an 'uh' noise.

Rh-u-s. Most of the emphasis is on the Rh.

The word briallu would be pronounced Bree-a-ll-ee. I assume you know how ll is pronounced :D

A popular girls name is heulwen haf - that means summer sun :)

I could go on... Lol.

I was close then! I can't remember exactly how the "rh" sounds, but I know the y was an "uh" sound.

I am so bad at the ll (and the rh). My breeder asked how it was pronounced and I tried to tell her (I actually got it right!), and probably sounded ridiculous. Bree-ah-lee would be a fairly close English approximation without having to say the ll at least.

Where syllable would be accented? They pronounce it BREE-ah-loo.

Trying to speak Welsh is like when my Asian friends at work (mostly Chinese and Japanese) try to teach me words. I just can't make those sounds!

Emphasis on the Bree I think.

It took me a long time to get the pronunciation, I'm from the direct opposite side of the country and we have very long and drawn vowels... The welsh have very quick tongue action LOL
