So yesterday I got a new dog. He's about 15 months old. His previous owners had no idea whether he was house trained or not, so I decided to see for myself. It just so happens that he's not.
I have no idea how to have him stop peeing inside. Where should I start?

Ah, take him outside, if he goes outside praise him, treats etc. Positive reinforcement is the only realy way IMO to truly housetrain an animal. Although, if they do go inside, pee/poop, I usually bring them to the scene of the crime and rub their nose in it............. NO! KIDDING! LOL, I'll bring them to the scene of the crime, say a firm "no", just once, and make them watch me clean it up so they know that it doesn't belong there.

You should do it just the same as you do for any other dog.

Here is how to get started:

1) CONFINEMENT AND SUPERVISION....

The dog should not be allowed to be free or out of your sight, AT ALL, in your house, for the next several weeks. Use a crate to confine the dog when you are away, and at night, or make sure he is safely confined in a secure outdoor area. You can leash the dog to your belt when you are at home. The idea of CONFINEMENT AND SUPERVISION is 2 fold: You PREVENT the dog from making mistakes in your home because he does not understand yet he is not to eliminate there, and 2, you put yourself in the position of pack leader by controlling the dogs comings and going.

2) SUPERVISION OF OUTDOOR ELIMINATION, STIMULUS CONTROL, AND REWARDS.....

Phase 2 of teaching your dog to be clean in the house means letting him know what you WANT him to do. You MUST accompany the dog outdoors to eliminate. Make SURE you keep some tasty treats in your pockets at all times. Designate an area of your yard as the potty area, and go to this area for elmination each time. Wait for the dog to go. Remain quiet, and don't play with the dog. As SOON as the dog begins to urinate or defecate, name the behavior. I use "go pee pee" for urinate, and "go poop" for defecate. You can say "hogwash" for all the dog cares. Just pick a name for each function, and each time the dog IS doing it, name it, over and over, as long as he is doing it, and praise him. The SECOND he is done, give him a tasty treat, and tell him what a good boy. Most dogs will eliminate on command within days of instituting this method of putting elimination on STIMULUS CONTROL. If you do nothing except reward your dog for outdoor elimination, most dogs will get trained.

3) ACCIDENTS.....

Will happen. IF you catch the dog IN the act, CLAP your hands, say no, and if he stops, RUSH him outdoors to his potty area and urge him to finish there. Come back in and clean up. Punishment will have no effect on getting the dog trained faster, and in fact may be very counterproductive. The dog won't learn anything about not going in the house, but he WILL learn to hide from you when he needs to go.

The basics of housetraining any dog are:

Confinement and supervision
SUpervision and reward of outdoor elimination

Good luck!

:D

training my dogs to go outside was actually an easy one. they are outside dogs (for a few more months). they get used to being outside when they have to do their business. so far (5 months old) they have only used the bathroom inside (pee only) 4 times total. this is awesome for me! now in the mornings, my alarm goes off at 5am. this is when i let them outside, and they immediately go to the bathroom. if i dont get up at 5am, and they need to potty, they jump on my bed (ahbbit to break) and start licking my face. (this SUCKS when you are in a very comfy sleep!!!). but i'm glad that they are warning me now instead of just releasing.

for house training, you might try the crate training idea. a dog won't normally use the restroom in a confined area where they are sleeping. but when you are home, leave the crate OPEN, and feed them inside it so they dont always associate it with punishment. my pups will sometimes go in their crate and just lay down; they fel safe in there now.
