I'm getting a basset puppy in May or June, and while I own two adult dogs currently, I've never had to housetrain them...my husband did this prior to our marriage, and while both Melvin and Puppy are housetrained, I'd hardly call him an expert on the subject. Couple that with the rumor that bassets are notoriously hard to housetrain, and in a panic, I sought out some literature on the subject. So, I picked up a copy of Susan McCullough's Housetraining For Dummies book...it was so helpful and informative, that I now feel relatively comfortable with housetraining, and I feel that I will survive the experience! Like all the Dummies books, the format was easy to follow, and covers most all areas of housetraining, from crate and indoor training, to leashes, to nutrition, to health-related housetraining issues, etc. Susan's style was informative, without alot of fluff and extraneous banter.

I decided to post this in the puppy forum, as I've been sifting through the archives, and I see a lot of threads on housetraining puppies (and adult dogs too)...it really can be a mystery to some people who are first-time puppy owners, as it was to me, initially. Of course the puppy isn't with me yet, so I am by no means "experienced" in the fine art of housetraining...I know it will be challenging, exhausting, and I'll probably be kicking my own butt as I jump back on Chaz with a hundred questions. However, reading the book beforehand did help to de-mystify this puppy newbie to some degree.
