My husband and I were thinking of getting a housekeeper to come in once a week. Between my always-changing work schedule, basket weaving for shows, spending time with Zeus and the hubby's long hours, finding time to give our house some care is getting stressful.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I'm not sure I like the idea of a strange person going through our house. You also hear so many stories of people's credit card numbers, jewelry, banking info, etc., being stolen. But the idea of someone else doing the weekly mopping, scrubbing, dusting and vaccuuming is quite tempting.

Anybody have any experience with housekeepers?

My friend has a house keeper come twice a week every week for as long as I've known him (bout...8 years).

Just gotta find a reputable service. Oh and of course you always hear about how they steal credit card numbers and valuable heirlooms. "Rita did a good job on Thursday" doesn't make for a very entertaining conversation.

I have had so MUCH experience with housekeepers,.........to bad it was only in my dreams. ;)

But, they were all fairy like, and very productive. My house looked like a showplace.........No dog hair anywhere.:D

I just wish I could make it a reality.

I dont think the worry about having someone in my house would make it worth it. I remember doing service work and hearing the guys in the shop talking about the underwear that a customer had in the hamper etc.

When I lived in apartments I remember calling for a repair to our toilet and made a specific request that no one was to go in the bedroom without my permission. They had no reason to look in there. I took a 2 tiny pieces of tape about the size of BB and taped a strand of hair from the door to the door frame about 2 inches above the floor. When I came home I saw that the hair had been pulled out of the tape. There was nothing in the bedroom but it let me know that they were snooping. Not all people are dishonest or perverted but they are all curious.

When I processed loans I would work ungodly hours, so I did get a house keeper to come in at least once per week. But, I was fortunate, my best friend owns a housekeeping business, I had nothing to worry about, she cleaned it herself. But, before I got smart, I did give another friend a try...( we are not the best of friend's now)she had help that was not bonded and uninsured, I had a diamond necklace, and ring disappear, and two co-workers that also used her, had rings and necklaces disappear. So, be careful.

If I were to get a housekeeper now, I would probably go with Molly Maids, they are bonded and insured. My best F will not drive an hour to clean my house. lol

My parents have (I think they still do) a woman come in every two weeks for half a day. Mom leaves her a list of things she wants done and it's usually bigger things that she doesn't want to do/won't get around to... like washing walls and other annoying things. She's always hired people through word of mouth and by checking references. She's never had a problem. Just make sure you check into them like for any other job. She's never gone through an agency either.

Well, perhaps if they are female you wont have to worry about them playing with guns, playing with your cutting torch, snooping through your underwear or hitting the liquor cabinet. Since all house cleaners are female or want to be, you should be ok. Chicks still harbor a bit of clepto thoughts though.

My mother had a cleaning woman come in. She was a friend of a friend's through work. She had her for about 2 years, and towards the end of her working there, she started slacking and wasn't doing too well of a job, so my mom let her go. My mom was paying a lot of money for her to be there, and she only came once a week for half a day, so I understand why she let her go!

One thing that my father massively disliked about her being there was that she always moved his "piles." LOL A little background on my father, he has piles and piles and piles and PILES of mail, but, you ask him for something and he knows exactly what pile it's in! So, he hated having his piles moved because he could never find stuff.

It is very nice to have a housekeeper though...just make sure you find one you trust! :)
