I remember wondering what the heck was I thinking, too. got Addie in Oct., Ham in Feb. I have to say that I decided winter helped with housetraining for me because they didn't want to be out in the cold! you know their 'routine' very quickly, and I'd whisk them out and tell them to go...and we'd wait it out until they did. (yes...it was BRUTAL cause I took them out every 3 or 4 hours round the clock..OH, how I HATED it at 2AM!!!) Ham has never liked the cold, so he learned immediately that going FAST meant getting back to a warm bed. LOL with mine, I think warmer months would have been nicer for me.......but they might have thought more about play instead of potty. :) I did the 'round the clock' routine for 2 or 3 weeks, and it isn't one of my fondest memories....but they've never had an accident since. and....they still (especially wimpy Hammie) go fast in the winter. :)

I just got my pup in January.I don't know what I was thinking. We live in Windsor, Ontario. It gets might cold here. The other night at 3 am I was standing outside in my pajamas wondering why I would get a puppy in the middle of winter, then after Fergus went peepee and I picked him up and he looked at me with those sad little puppy eyes and licked my nose........Then it was all very clear.

hi vaderdoo!

Does your puppy wake you up during the night?

Because Yoshi doesn't make a sound, until we're getting up ourselves. Which is a good and a bad thing, because he might pee or not in his cage and we do not hear a sound... makes housebreaking that much harder.

Yoshi is definetly a mommy's boy.

This morning, I took him out for a pee pee, then he ate, and as soon as he was done, he climbed up the stairs to join my wife. Now, my wife is out the door and he cries because she left the house. I'm not a good replacement for her, apparently. :(

I'm probably the one who's more authoritarian in the house.

My little boy hates me :( :(

have you thougth of using puppy pads inside?

Iv'e been using those puppy pads for training my pup since he was 6wks. I watched him like a hawk at first. whenever he would start to squat I would put him on the puppy pad and he'd do his business. Then after wards I'd praise him & pet him saying "good job" ect. it worked great. but, sometimes he'll get lazy and not want to walk clear across the room to potty. So, I introduced him to small treats after every puppy pad use. he gets really excited about that. he understands the concept of puppy pad =treats. but ever so often he gets lazy. but i just keep doing what i do and hes getting better & better.:)

Weird behaviour today.

Went outside in the morning as usual, and the puppy peed. I praised and gave a treat.

We went inside, and less than a minute later, he peed on the floor again.

What's with that?!

Sheesh

Sometimes they don't do it all in the first go ;)

Bodhi will have maybe 2 wee's when I let her out.

A firm NO when he is caught in the act of weeing on the floor, and take him straight outside again. Stay out till he has a little dribble and praise lots!

I'm in Nova Scotia and it's easily -20 C in the winter here!! I have min pins. They are basically bare-chested!! From under their chin to their tails, they have almost NO fur!!!!

I have all of them litter trained :) No WAY would my first one pee outside - no way, no how, uh-uh, then I read about litter training small breed dogs and thought, heck, why not?

I have four min pins now and all are litter trained. When it's nice outside in the summer months, they go outside. I never TAUGHT them to go outside - they just figured it out for themselves :)

One still prefers to come inside and use the box, though!! ROFL!!!

I'd advise you to try pee pads or litter box training until the spring. Then, hopefully by next winter when it gets cold again and she has a full coat of fur, maybe she'll be better about going outside?

Best of luck to you!!!! Large dogs are SO much easier to house train!!!! :)

Well, right now we got pee-pee pads in front of each doors. So at least, if he decides to go, he'll get some kind of habit of going to the same place.

Fortunatly, right now, everytime (almost) we take him out of his cage after a while, we go outside and he'll relieve himself within the minute.

Unfortunatly, he doesn't understand that he could poop there as well. right now, he poops when we have our head turned, but often he goes on the pads. pee pee are getting better that way, less accidents, more consistently going on the pad.

Still a work in progress.

LOL I'm just looking at him sleeping on his back right now... so funny... it's so worth it. :)

My dogs don't like to go to the bathroom when it's cold outside...my terrier mix who has the shortest fur of my three, will rush out and then rush back in LOL. Sometimes they'll refuse to go out LOL

Good luck with your pup!

The neighbour...
March 19th 2006 10:38 pm

It seem I have a neighbour. I mean, of course I do. I have other human houses around, and even some that are being built, but what I mean is that I have a dog neighbour.

I don't know how we managed to not get notice of each others during the last couple of months. The cold temperature and the short trips outside probably didn't help.

Anyway, I was out this morning to go for a morning pee, which I didn't do... I'm trying to break the habit... and I heard barking.

I was curious, so I climbed up a snow heap to see who was talking to me. Well, she doesn't interest me. She's a white Cocker Spaniel and she seems to mind my presence. I simply didn't give her the pleasure of a reply. I only bark when my humans leave my by myself anyway. I minded my own business. She stays in her yard, I'll stick to mine... for the time being.

Oh... I forgot, I got the visit of grandpa and grandma today! It was so exciting...

I really love weekends, they are so eventful!

Tonight, before going to bed, I was surfing the net while rubbing Yoshi's tummy while he was lying on the floor next to me. At one point, I heard a fluidy grumbling coming from the puppy. He stood up, and I could feel it going forward and backward in his inside, until he puked (on a towel that was conveniently there).

Does that happens often?

brem, a little bit worried.

In the words of Yoshi:

The snow's gone! Where am I supposed to go pee and poo?

****... I'll have to go on the dirt... or... I can try again inside... let's see what my human says about that.
