ever since i started giving 12 week old lou special treats for peeing outside, she's been emptying half her bladder or peeingjust a little bit or even faking it.

i've stepped up the supervision and time in her crate, so a lot of times i'll see her sniffin around and lead her outside. but sometimes it's a sneak attack (no sniffing, and only a few seconds after coming inside). When i catch her in the act i'll run at her and grab her and put her outside-if she's near the (normally open) door. if she's not i'll usually just put my hands over my face in frustration, and depending on my mood, yell ****!! LOU!!

is she saving up her pee for more treats? and if that's the case why is she sniffing/peeing indoors?

i just now had a thought- the place she pees outside is tile so her pee puddle spreads to her feet. is it possible she's stopping because she's feeling the pee on her feet?

additional information: the balcony to our apartment is pretty much the same as the inside of the place. is this confusing her? she knows the command "outside" and will jump to the other side of the door frame for a treat. maybe if i made it different somehow or always had the door shut instead of always open?

If you have trained your puppy to eliminate on tile, then that is what she will head for when she has to go. You might try making a litter box for her. Some topsoil, grass. Then she will associate grass with potty time.

I think the indoor/outdoor areas having the same tile will be confusing her. As Maura said, it would be a good idea to get her a box/shallow tray to toilet in if no grass or dirt areas are available. Fill the box with soil and grow/lay ready made grass in it and then re-train her to use this. (you'll have to clean/water it on a regular basis). In the meantime supervision will be key. if she is not crated, keep her near you. Many of my new arrivals, weather pup or adult dog, go with me everywhere. clip her leash on your belt, and she wont be able to sneak off to toilet in the wrong place (or get into any other mischief for that matter ;)) plus you have your hands free to go about your day. Do make sure you take her to her new toilet spot regularly, every half hour/hour to begin with. Praise (and treat) her like she is the most clever dog in the world when she has eliminated where you want her to go and ignore any accidents if she has them. Punishing her or yelling will not help in this situation and can lead to more problems; the lack of praise will be 'punishment' enough. Dogs learn through repetition, if she only toilets in her correct spot (associated with grass) and gets lots of praise for doing the right thing she should learn very quickly and use grassed areas as well when out on walks. Dogs know when something they do works for them, it's the 'what's in it for me attitude', us humans just have to be very clear in our instructions :D

Good luck and have fun with little Lou :)

Can you not take her down to some grass? It must be extremely confusing for her... and yes, really gross that she pees on her own feet. She could be tracking pee scents all over your apartment after peeing outside, and smelling that later and thinking that it's ok to pee inside.

I would begin taking her out to grass or get a "doggy litterbox" of some sort (faux grass or just potty pads) for your patio. Depending on how big she's going to be full grown, you might want to just get her trained to go potty on grass.

Also, make sure you don't treat her WHILE she's going potty. Wait until the second she's done and say "goooood potty!", then treat.
