I have an Eli-Aligator game bred American Pit Bull Terrier. She is 17 months old. I currently have her on Science Diet which she has been on for about 8 months or so. Foolishly, I used to feed her all sorts of human foods, not knowing the extent of damage that that can cause. I found this out about 2-3 weeks ago and havn't fed her any human food since. But I feel bad and I want to include some sort of human type food in her diet. I was wondering about maybe mixxing ground beef with the food? or Vegetables, fruits, etc. What things are good for dogs, specifically for pit bulls?

I'm interested in what sort of damage these "human foods" can cause to a dog?

Speaking from experience - Science diet can worsen food allergies in pit bulls. My pit mix was fed that before i adopted him and he had hives all over his feet and other parts of his body. Washing his paws was much more back breaking than switching his diet - first to wellness and then to Innova.

Any diet can cause damage if it isn't properly formulated - whether you use "human foods" or not doesn't have anything to do with it whatsoever. It needs to have proper amounts of nutrients for your dog's body weight, and in correct ratios.

Don't just start feeding willy-nilly, read a few good books on dog nutrition, such as for example

"Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health" and
"Work Wonders: Feed Your Dog Raw Meaty Bones" by Tom Lonsdale

"Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats" by Kymythy Schultze

"Raw Dog Food: Make It Easy for You and Your Dog" by Carina Beth MacDonald

Well, my vet told me that grapes and raisins can make dogs sick. I don't remember the medical terms and such. And that a lot of human foods can cause pancreacitis. Please exuse the spelling. Amoung other things.

I would like to be able to get EVERYTHING from PetsMart. My vet is Banfield in PetsMart and I buy toys, etc there. So i would like to stay with PetsMart food. What about Blue Buffalo? Is that one that you all would recommend?
