We need to find a home for our 170 lb male St. Bernard. He knows commands, and listens very well, housebroken, BUT shows fear aggression. We are looking for someone that is willing to take the time to work with him to gently re-train him, which is possible, we just do not have the time or room that it will take. He is very sweet ONCE he gets to know you, but he has to work up to it. Must go to someone with a fenced yard, NO CHILDREN, with time will warm up to another dog..loved both our others and loves our cats. Free to the right home and situation. Please help us find a home....as this is a very hard decision. Even if you are not interested, but pass the word around, we know the right place is out there for him.
Thanks for taking the time to read our post :)
I mean, my 75lb LAB with fear aggression is bad enough....

Oh, great. Take a giant breed dog, with fear aggression, and put it through possibly the single most fear inducing trauma a dog can go through - rehoming.

Brilliant, fsckers.

I think she means that a lot of people on craigslist will only see "St. Bernard- free-to good home" and think that they can put up with that "little bit of fear aggression".

All of the above, and also the small issue of Class B dealers. (Use of small here is sarcastic).

And I have never heard your rant on this point. Care to indulge me?

I can say first hand that a full grown aggressive St Bernard is a *scary* thing. A friend of mine had one--he bit the utility man, bit a 12 year old boy, and bit a few other people "off the record." He *hated* African Americans and once nearly went through a window to get at a 2 year old black girl. He has since been euthed...

It is.

I worked for an attorney for years whose wife was, to put it mildly, a first class "C" - and that's with a capital "C." She'd insist on having him ask me to do all sorts of silly personal errand type things for her just to prove she could. I went along with most of them to keep things running smoothly.

Well, this woman who had all the warm, fuzzy nurturing instincts of a male crocodile decided she HAD to have a dog . . . just like the one her sister had when they were kids. A St. Bernard/Great Pyr cross.

She found a "breeder." Got the puppy and *raised* it herself.

The damned thing was a menace. It wouldn't stay in the yard - with the little 4 foot high iron rail fence (surprise!) and it didn't want to come home (surprise again!) Most of the time when it got out she'd call and the "hired man" and I would have to find it in the neighborhood and bring it back home.

The dog was leash reactive as all get-out, but we managed. I drew the line, though, when they were out of town and had asked me to go over during the day and let the dog out, feed and water, the usual drill. The dog did NOT want to come back inside and lunged at me when I tried to put on the leash to lead her back inside.

Oh, yah, I'm surely going to try THAT again.

I found a ham in the refrigerator and used it to lure her back inside, shut the door behind her and locked it, called my boss and told him I wasn't dealing with the dog anymore. Period. Ever.
