We have a 6 month old westie and live in the Adirondacks in New York State. We usually walk him about 4 miles per day but with spring and summer approaching, our hiking boots are screaming at us from the closet. A typical summer hike for us is somewhere between 7-15 miles, with a vertical ascent of about 2000-3000 feet, rarely going for long hikes that may include total ascents of 5000-8000 feet. We would love to take Calvin with us when possible, and were wondering if any of you out there knew how much he could handle, or how long it would take him to get in shape for a 15 or 20 mile day hike. Thanks!

Doesn't anyone here hike with their dog? We chose a breed for specific traits, such as the ability to walk and hike a lot, and I just want to make sure I don't overwork the little guy. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Defiantly it would be great for him BUT i wouldnt start him out going that far without having room to carry him in a backpack or something when he gets tired. I bet he would just love it. I know when we had a chi on our farm he loved to go on rides with us and when he got tired hed sit in the saddle with us.
