One of my Mini pins is probably the most finicky eater ever. We've tried several different foods, and he was eating Canidae for quite awhile, but lately he's decided that he'd rather be skin and bones than to continue it. We went to the store a few weeks back and got several samples of different foods, and one that he reacted to like he's never reacted to food before, was Instinct Chicken. We ended up buying a 5 lb bag of it, and he's been doing great eating it ever since. Now, today, I had one of my other dogs in for a routine checkup, and the vet commented on how good he looks finally (he was a premature Min Pin and has never caught up,) which got us on the subject of food, since we recently switched him from Canidae to Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit. He never really took to the Canidae, but we think he was just having too much trouble chewing it up, which is a problem he absolutely doesn't have with the Wee Bits. I then mentioned that we're feeding Apollo the Instinct, and the vet seemed rather concerned about the 42% protien in it as far as future kidney damage and such.

This vet is NOT one of the vets that recommends Science Diet or Iams, the first time we saw him and he asked what we fed, and we said Canidae, he seemed very pleased with our choice, and he recommended trying Innova and Solid Gold for Apollo, so I do tend to listen to his advice on food.

Does anyone know where I can find more info regarding the dangers or myths about high protien food? Also, this may be a dumb question, but could I mix the Instinct with another lower protein food source (possibly raw??) to help average things out? I love the fact that he's eating well finally, and I love seeing a little meat on his bones, but I'm not really willing to trade that for health problems down the road. I also really don't have any problems with feeding him whatever he needs, since as it is, two of my Min Pins, and my Rottie still get the Canidae since they do really well on it, and my little guy gets the Solid Gold, so I'm not worried about the hassle of having more foods around. Oh, and we did try the Nature's Variety Prairie chicken, thinking he might eat it since it's the same company, but he turned his nose right up to it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks Zoom, that site is, and has been, on the top of my bookmark list for a long time, and I've directed almost every dog owner I know to that site. Unfortunately, that bookmark only points to the dog food ratings page, and up until now, I've never really taken the time to explore the rest of the site. Now that I have, it appears as though the high protien is fine as long as it's accompanied with a fair amount of water.

This goes to another potential problem then, Apollo is not a big drinker, and even if you put a piece of steak in water, he won't eat it, much less kibble soaked in water. I have, however, noticed with feeding the little premature puppy Canidae ground in the blender with water, that Apollo will eat that "paste," even if it's a food that he doesn't really like. Tomorrow I'll break out the blender again and make him some Instinct "soup" and see what he thinks of that, and actually, thinking about it more, I guess I could mix in some Canidae and that would effectively lower the protien just a bit?

Funny how answers can be right in front of you and all you need is a little nudge to see them...lol

Thanks again, and any other opinions are more than welcome.

Lol, I well know how helpful it can be to bounce ideas off of someone.

If he likes to eat a paste, then feed him a paste. Just also make sure to keep up on his dental care, since wet food sticks to teeth like none other.

Thanks, and I already read that, and that was why I started mixing the water with the food, that way I know he's safe, since he doesn't tend to drink much on his own.
