A small problem that I hope someone can help with. Our 2 yr bitch GSD, Skye,is often exercised with a white male GSD, Casper. His owner advises that he has a stomach upset which is present almost all the time.

More often than not, Skye develops a stomach disorder (loose bowels) within 24 hr of being exercised with Casper. Skye's problem rectifies itself within a day or so and things return to normal. Skye's diet is James Wellbeloved anti allergenic dry food with the occasional Butchers/Pedigree wet food. Skye is not allowed wheat products (gluten)/potato (starch) and no tit bits are allowed. If she doesn't see Casper, then she is almost always OK.

It strikes me that Casper is a permanent carrier of something nasty as he is always 'loose.'
Can anyone enlighten me as to a course of action....what could this be.
I don't want to stop her seeing a good friend.

Welcome fellow GSD addictee.

It could be the excersise loosening things up.I would be switching foods though.I havent heard of james wellbeloved but pedigree is bad.I feed Sasha my GSD Canidae and have no poo issues at all.

Have you asked the owner what tummy disorder the dog has.Your dog could be catching something from the dog she plays with.Maybe you will get more help if you post this in the health area.

Welcome aboard, we are a hugh fan of pictures here, so please please.

I feed 1/2 raw and 1/2 Kirkland Signatures Chicken and rice kibble....no poo problems either. I agree with Lisa [GermanSheperdGurl] post it in the health section and someone will be able to help you.

I guess the question should be, does your dog get loose stools when she is exercised in a similar way by herself?

And welcome, and where are the pics!

I agree, what is her excercise level when she is not playing with him, and does it have the same result. a lot of excercise can cause loose bowels. I would also suggest changing her food as a possible solution.

It's entirely possible that her buddy's got some sort of bug. Try talking to your vet and taking an "after play" stool sample in to have analyzed.

If you're keeping her off of grains, Innova EVO is a one of the best.

And, if there's nothing organic causing the runs, a couple of big spoonfuls of canned pumpkin (not pie filling - just plain pumpkin) will firm things up.

hello...I also have gsd's...3 females and 1 male and a pup. I was going to suggest getting stool checked...they say giaderia (sp) can be brought on by stress...playing and getting excited with him might be stress and cause the runs...I would start there...I feed mine Diamond lamb and rice and have tried canidea, merick and natural balance for my finicky girl...she eats the diamond puppy...(when it was in her bowl she didnt want it though...) she reluctantly at some of the others...but...she eats with the pup very heartly now...I hope you find out soon what the problem if any is happening...take care

What I would suggest is after these exciting romps the owner should perhaps give a bland evening meal.

I find that many dogs when excited, stressed etc can get really runny stools. I work at a Kennel and a few of my friends breed/show Shepherds all over the Continent. I get the ones left behind in for boarding, when they develop diarrhea (which is due to stress), I either skip their evening meal (except some Shepherds are just so darn skinny and the breeders have to keep weight on them) In that case the breeders leave me tupperware of bland white rice and boiled hamburg or boiled white chicken, gradually giving yogurt for the next breakfast with perhaps banana. I also put slippery elm bark in their food, I use this on my dogs for loose stools in cases of excitment, anything other than a medical issue.

As suggested the owner should have a stool sample looked at by a Vet. Make sure it's multiple samples throughout a time frame of a couple of weeks. Some worms will not show up in every stool sample and perhaps only shed every other day or so. For example Giardiasis oocysts are only shed intermittently and fecals should be done 2 days apart...you would need 3 negetive smears to be sure the dog does not have this parasite. The Vet should also check for Coccidiosis and perhaps have your dog checked to....some dogs are carriers and many adult dogs have it...the only time they really cause huge problems is in dogs with lowered immunity and puppies. You should have a fecal done on your dog as well.

Just some other hints, the owner may want to try Natura's California Natural. This food is great for dogs with food intolerances or sensitive stomach. Feed 2-3 meals a day. I add ground flax seeds in my dogs food, and their evening meal is always raw as a raw diet seems to be easier on the stomach. Make sure the dog is either on probiotics or a good organic natural plain yogurt .

If the dogs immune system is down and he is prone to little bouts of diarrhea and all health tests come back clean. I add Astragalus to my dogs diet (especially my older Newf and Athena) to boost their immune system.:)

If it's the only time, I'd have a stool sample checked but I'm guessing it's excitement/stress.
Dante always has a soft stool at the dog park :D
