I have been browing around for a bit and just signed up today. I actually saw a post about banning in Arkansas and that gets my blood boiling so I had to register to say something.
Anyway, I have a mutt at home. The only obvious breed in him is dauschund which I don't hink I spelled correctly.
I am 21 years old and married and we are hoping to add a puppy to the family in a few months after we get settled into our new apartment. It will probably be from a shelter. I can't stand the thought of a dog being put down due to someone else's carelessness, so every dog I have ownded has been a recue. In fact, with the exception of 3 small animal pets and random, poor, unsuspecting goldfish...all of my animals have been rescues. The majority are rehomed.
My most favorite success story is of a mini doxxy I snagged from a home (not stole). He had gone to a pound as a very abused dog. Some of his ribs are turned a little funny and his tail has very obviously been broken. It doesn't bend, at all. It's seriously incapable. So a family with another dog and 2 young kids adopted him. They didn't watch him carefully and the other dog was taking all of the food. This dog pottied in fear. He never bit or growled, just cowered and peed. They were going to return him to the pound, but I kew what his fate would be. So home he came with me after i had a long....chat with my hubby. It took me over a year, but he is full and healthy. He is the most beautiful dapple guy i have ever seen. And he picked his forever home...my dad! They get a long great and the little one is full of courage and life. He even has a great, curious and brave personality now.
Sorry about all the rambling, but I have to boast on Spotty. he came so far. My own dog came from a rescue society. He is very untrusting and I, unfortunately, haven't been able to do much to change that. He has to get to really know you. He is kept on a close leash when we are out, but he is a happy-go-lucky guy with his family. I have just had to learn to accept that he could not be a dog I could take with me to places.
By the way, my poor hubby is not an animal person. He was raised as "animals are just animals and they belong outside!" Let me tell you how well that worked when he first tried that one me. Over 3 years later and my dog sleeping under the covers with us....
