Wow its been forever since i have been on here and i am sorry about that my life is really changing right now. Okay an update on me really quick would be I am starting high school this year and my hockey life is increasing BIG time I have scouts that want me for their colleges ever since the womens team that I was on won nationals which felt awesome. But I need some advice... I am not playing womens hockey right now and my question is that the hockey team in my hometown wants me to play for them and it is an all guys team, with full checking and all, and I will be the only girl but if I get hurt I wont get my scolarship but if I don't play I will be letting that team down. I really don't know what i am going to do it has got me really stressed. Try-outs are this weekend.
Welcome back.
As to your question... IF you are serious about playing NCAA womens hockey, DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT play in a mens league that is full contact. Checking hockey is first of all, WAY more than just "hitting". The idea of checking is to force the puck carrier away from the puck. As you probably know, in non-checking hockey you cannot even lean on people working in the corners. So, if you play in a contact league not only will you most likely get hurt, (not JUST because you are a girl) your game will change. You would most likely not succeed at a scouting combine as your game will be used to the contact. You will draw a lot of penalties too.
Stick to the womens game. In a way, I like it better. more flow and creativity. Less power and predictability. By that I mean when I play, especially in the upper levels, I just KNOW what the player is going to do. They are moving so fast and with such power there really is only a few moves they can make. The slower womens game, with the concept of checking removed, makes for more ice and more options. Like, have you ever noticed how much deeper women goalies play in their net? Know why? They generally have less time to react as plays happen off passes more often. Me, I am WAY out on top, a lot. I need to be because I am old and slow, AND the people I play against are predictable. LOL I just need to cover more angle and its all good. LOL
Good luck and DO NOT play contact hockey. Oh, what position do you play?
