I have a girlfriend with a dog trained in protection. Does anyone know how to get a dog trained in such a manner to accept you as a friend and not think you are an intruder and attack you? Every time I go near the house the dog gets angry and tries to attack. Is there anyway I can teach this dog not to attack me? Please help.

The dog doesn't sound terrible stable, as they should only attack on command. I would recommend that you be the only one to feed it to start with and see what happens from there. I don't mean by hand, just be the one to give the dog it's bowl, even if it's on a leash across the room when you do it and has to be physically released once you're a safe distance away. Dogs tend to love those who feed it the most.

What kind of dog, how long has he been in training and where?

^Agreed.

Dogs trained in protection do not display such behaviour (at least ones that have been WELL trained and are of stable temperment).

Did she train this dog herself or get the help of a professional?

First off I agree with the other posters
second it isn't your place to train someone else's dog if they want it that way. You can suggest to her that she needs to seek a trainers help but you should not even attempt to try to retrain it if you have to ask how.
It is not your dog and you should not try to handle it.

I'm not sure where you live. Is the place the dog was protection trained near by? If yes, contact them as to the best way to be integrated into the dog's life so is accepts you into your girlfriend's life. There are protection dogs that are trained to be a one-person dog which may be the case here so you must be careful in the steps you take to be accepted. I think contacting a professional dog protection training place would be the best first step for you to take.

I agree with Aussie. You need a professional if this is what you and your girlfriend want. I wouldn't advise trying to deal with this yourselves. It does sound like a confused dog who doesn't know an intruder from a friend....something wrong with the socializing and training there. A good protection dog is able to discriminate. And a well trained protection dog also does not act this way.

^^^Echo what everyone else says. Protection-trained dogs are suppossed to be just as reliable and safe as your average pet. They should not only "turn on" with a command, but it should also "turn off" by command. They're also taught to recognize threat situations ---for example, a protection dog can tell the difference between a friendly visitor and a burglar.

The way your girlfriend's dog is acting is WAY out of character for a true protection dog. If she took that dog to a "professional" to be trained, I would be pounding on that trainer's door and asking for my money back at least.

This sounds like a dog with aggression issues, not a protection dog.

I also agree, a true protection dog does not indiscrimanently "attack"..

My male's father was Personal Protection Trained, and I've been around quite a few Shutzhund dogs, a friend who has a working police dog,,ALL of them are easy to live with, aloof, but totally accepting of anyone unless otherwise directed .

I guess I would ask, who trained the dog to be protection trained?

professionaly trained dogs would never attack just everyone they meet, they wait for a command. however, since this dog does, and there's nothing that can be done about it now, just try getting friendly with it. try petting it to start with. keep your hands well away from its head till it trusts u a little. and DO NOT even touch its neck. keep movements slow. and always keep your girlfriend around to supervise the dog

If the dog is trying to attack him just for getting near the house, trying to pet it will probably land him in the ER. This is going to require a real live professional to properly deal with what's going on here.

You can not train the dog to do anything.
You should stay away from the dog unless the owner is there.

Territory guardians such a Cane Corso, Presa, LGDS will protect the property without being PP trained and some are indeed PP trained making them different than a GSD..

Being PP trained should mean the dog can be called off .

May I ask what breed is it?

The way I get my dog sitter and buyers into my working natural pack is to command them into acceptance command with ME present.

I then use the soft commands to tell them you are okay.
If you have a full Italian dinner here you are now part of the pack.
Becaue you were PROPERLY introduced.

My dogs naturally protect my property and are NOT aggressive they are PROTECTIVE.
They also have passed every KNOWN TT test from CGC to Therapy work.

Many breeds of dogs without PP work are protective on home turf.
Pack LGDS extend family units easier than some one people breed dogs.

So depending on the breed the owner may need to socialize you with the dog OFF property.

My only non trusting CAS out of 40 that have come and gone.
Took 3 dinners and now Candy our dog horse sitter can come and go with a pack of 13 dogs. Once a naturally protective breed with pack drives accepts a new human member that human member is protected and loved EQUAL to the owners..

So without the breed and background of what your define as PP dog .
Its hard to give you proper advice.

Police dogs, SCH, Mondio, PP work in defense , etc etc have different approuches.

I have some new videos and pics to show case a ON and OFF switch to defense of the owner in natural protective breeds .
To dispell the rumour that they are "aggressive " or uncontrolable" without.

Will share soon here on Chaz.
