Like the title says, is henna dye safe for dogs? It is a natural product so I can't imagine it as unsafe and I can't vegetable based dyes. I want to dye Bella's brown, black. Just for fun... and one of our adopted dogs has a HUGE white spot on her I want to dye black also for fun.

Would the black turn red/brown over white?

I'd only use BAQ henna on me or my dogs. Not the cheap stuff from the local stores.

Indigo is 'black henna'. I use standard henna to make my own hair red. You can mix indigo, cassia and types of henna to make different colours.

I did Smudge with henna this summer. His highlights changed in the sun.

Back leg orangyness is henna as are his ears

Cider is currently dyed with a vegetable based dye.. Beyond the Zone, it is manic panic like. It's what we used on Dekka's bum heart, and Kerri's bangs.

I found on pure white fur the colours looked bright. On buff it is a little dulled.

It was brighter on Kerri's hair than Cider's fur.

I think in the area I get henna from they only sell BAQ henna, the reason for asking about henna and not any other thing was being Rottweilers, their hair colour is dark and I know henna can be used on dark hair and make a difference. I have used henna on myself countless amounts of times, but on my hands when making traditional patterns when attending weddings or for dewali etc. never used it on my hair.

Any experience with black henna dye MP? I really want to dye Vicky's white spot black but I think it may turn a different colour and look odd. LOL.

I think Smudge looks awesome. I really didn't know you got other colours than the black and the regular coloured henna. I suppose I just didn't look for it though. Would love to be able to dye my dogs in weird patterns but I always thought I could not because they are black.

This is the place Renee recommended I get henna from, and I've been really happy with their stuff. You can also buy little sample envelopes, which would probably work really well for dying Bella's points on a budget. You could also try different kinds that way to see what effect you like best.

Dye hair glorious red: no chemicals, no fading and no allergic reactions

They also have indigo and cassia, and a really handy chart explaining what hues you can expect when layering different dyes over different base colors.

I use their stuff for dyeing doll hair. Which has including clippings of Strider's hair. So it does work well on dog.

Thanks Romy, the mixes part of that will be really useful. However I won't be buying from there not in America so not cost effective. There are many Indian specialist stores near me and most of them have natural henna without all the chemicals. We use the natural henna to make patterns on our hands for special occasions in the traditional way (I am Indian). I will try the henna first on my own hair, and then on the dogs hair. I have INCREDIBLY brittle at the moment and so anything that can go wrong will go wrong on my hair first.

I am worried about my hair being bluish black with the indigo dye. As my natural hair colour is already a yucky redish black and if it gets sun bleached it's much worse like a gross red colour. So swopping the red for blue will really be a no no. I would rather stick with the red :(

I'm in Canada. Mehendi overcharges for shipping like 32 plus for 500g. I won't buy there either.

Henna helps strengthen hair. If yours is brittle it may help it. Before I switched from chemical dye to henna I got advice on The Long Hair Community one subsection is all about henna.

This is my hennaed hair using a red from hennahut

Your hair looks awesome. I have only ever dyed mine once. With regular dye. I dyed it black because the red undertone of my hair was freaking me out. My hair is brittle due to the fact it still has not recovered since I went for two ops in close proximity to each other. The anaesthetic ruined my hair. Thank you for the advice! Will read through that forum!

ETA: I REFUSE to cut my hair. It used to be LONG way past my bum and I cut it and cut it and cut it and I am so angry with myself that I refuse to cut it again. I want long hair again and right now it is about 10cms away from my bum

Specsy, are you using a shampoo that is SLS and paraben free? My hair was going to hell -- FAST. I was terrified I was going to end up with short hair  Switching the shampoo along with using henna and amla not only saved it, but my hair is better than it has ever been, even when I was a child. I haven't been able to get it trimmed for over a year now, but there are zero split ends and this is the first time my hair has ever gained length in a respectably short period of time.

Thanks hun. Use the forum, look around.. read and ask some Qs before making the henna leap as it is permanent.. But it can help with the quality of your hair.

Post pics if you play with your own or your pups :)

Renee to be honest I don't have a clue what you're talking about. I usually just buy whatever is at the grocery store. Never paid much attention to my hair as it used to be INCREDIBLY healthy. THICK and healthy and straight and silky. Now its gross. Absolutely gross. I am running a split end farm at the end of my hair right now :( . I think I may have to cut this weekend because it is THAT terrible. Maybe start a thread in Fire Hydrant as it is off topic to dogs. I am interested though in what the booger you're talking about.

Will definitely be trying the henna out MP. It does not seem like it will ruin my hair rather it may even benefit it. I will dye the underneath of my hair and not the top (I suppose I may look slightly bipolar but hey) that way if I REALLY wanted to hide it I could. If it turns out ok, I'll do the rest. It can always grow out. Just the same as the black permanent hair dye grew out eventually. My hair grows at an okay pace. So stuff does grow out, I just didn't want to cut right now as I am almost at the length I wanted to be, but I will suck it up, and cut. Rather healthy short hair than icky long hair.

As for the dogs, I think their coats would do MUCH better, due to the fact they have really course coats. I will try it. If it goes of well, you may see some funny looking chaz Rotts on here soon.
